26, including 2 Yomiuri Giants players, test negative for coronavirus

A total of 26 people who had contact with two Yomiuri Giants players who had been infected with the new coronavirus -- including nine who were confirmed by a health center as close contacts of the two -- all tested negative in PCR tests on Wednesday.

Giants' infielder Hayato Sakamoto, 31, and catcher Takumi Oshiro, 27, tested borderline positive with the virus under a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test on Tuesday, although the results of their antibody tests at the end of May showed a type of antibody called immunoglobulin G (IgG) in their blood, which indicates recovery from the coronavirus infection, according to the Yomiuri Giants. The players then underwent additional PCR testing and tested negative on Wednesday after being admitted to a Tokyo hospital based on their previous PCR test results, the team announced Thursday. The two were found to have no problems following detailed examinations such as CT scans, and their team aims to help the two players leave the hospital and rejoin the team as soon as possible.

In response to the results of the 26 people, the Yomiuri Giants confirmed that it would hold its future activities as scheduled, including a practice game against the Yakult Swallows at Tokyo Dome on Friday.

On Thursday, a total of 96 members, including the Giants' executives, players and staff underwent PCR tests.
