26 astonishing pictures that sum up the incredible transformation of Leeds city centre

A fascinating new book has been published this week which reveals what Leeds city centre looked like more than 100 years ago - and how it has drastically changed over time.

Leeds Then and Now has been put together by author Eric Musgrave, who was born right here our city.

Similar books have already been published on the likes of London, Cambridge and Edinburgh, but this latest addition is a reminder of just how quickly things have changed in Leeds.

The book charts the remarkable transformation that has taken place on some of Leeds' most iconic streets, including The Headrow, Vicar Lane and Briggate - which Eric has described as 'the flesh and blood of Leeds' spirit'.

"I was born and brought up in Leeds, but I quite frankly knew nothing about the city before I started researching it," admitted Eric, who was born in Osmondthorpe in the 1960s.

"We're so blessed in Leeds that historic buildings have been so well preserved.

"The book is told in a sequence, so it's like a guided tour of Leeds, and it really focuses on the Victorian times.

"I wanted to do something a bit different so I decided to concentrate on the city centre and the shopping destinations.

"What we see now on Briggate is basically the layout that was done in the late Victorian period. It's the flesh and blood of Leeds' spirit.

"The one that is really interesting is the Victoria Quarter.

"The whole area used to be slums and little markets and pubs. Then they demolished all that and made these amazing arcades.

"As someone who was born and brought up in Leeds I find it fascinating. I'm very proud of being from Leeds."

Leeds Then and Now is available to buy for £14.99 from bookstores across Leeds, including Waterstones.
