BHOPAL: The spike in the reporting of crime against women cases to police which started as the city ‘unlocked’ after Corona curfew continued till September. The cases of crime against women were being reported on a regular basis to police.
Recent figures showed a rise in crime against children too in the city.
A comparative study of crime against women cases with past year till September shows that there has been a considerable rise in molestation cases and other crimes against women cases.
As per police data, 388 molestation cases were reported this year till September while 251 rape cases were reported during the same period. 486 cases of cruelty against women (Section 498A) were reported this year till September while 287 abduction cases were reported this year till September. In most of these abduction cases, charges of rape were added to the case after the missing girls and women were recovered by police.
Mental health experts maintained that there are many factors responsible for the rise in crime against women cases. Most of them could be controlled by raising awareness and counselling. People should approach professional counsellors whenever they need help.
Police officials maintained that the rise in crime against women can be attributed to many factors, especially the social factors. These issues need to be addressed by various departments and not only police. There is an urgent need to raise awareness in society on these issues. Police officials anonymously said that various government departments need to work along with NGOs in various areas to address the issue.
