25-year-old dies with coronavirus as hospital deaths in England stay high

A further 907 people have died with coronavirus in English hospitals - including a 25-year-old.

The latest data shows the South West's Covid death toll increased by 67 today (January 28) - the lowest rise in the country.

Today's total brings the nation's overall number of hospital Covid deaths to 69,801, including a 46-year-old with no underlying health conditions.

The Midlands saw the biggest rise, where 175 people died, 167 deaths were recorded in London and 163 in the East of England.

Patients were aged between 25 and 104 years old. All except 33 (aged 46 to 102 years old) had known underlying health conditions.

Date of death ranges from 11 November 2020 to 27 January 2021 with the majority being on or after 22 January.

The number of deaths of patients with Covid-19 by region are as follows:

  • East of England - 163
  • London - 167
  • Midlands - 175
  • North East & Yorkshire - 72
  • North West - 121
  • South East – 142
  • South West - 67

Bristol and its neighbouring areas confirmed 15 deaths on Wednesday in all settings, while Gloucestershire reported 12, and Somerset recorded 14.

During a Downing Street press conference on Wednesday, Sir Patrick Vallance said hospital admissions and deaths are decreasing, but it's 'very early days'.

He said: "This isn’t coming down quickly, we remain at very high levels and it is going to take weeks for this to come down to really low levels.

“But I want to remind us all that we remain in a difficult position at the moment and there are still very high levels.”
