25 pictures from Liverpool training as James Milner 'wins' gruelling lactate test

James Milner proved he has lost none of his durability when Liverpool returned to pre-season training on Saturday.

Milner was among a group of players back at Melwood as the Reds began their preparations for the new campaign.

Among the exercises the squad were put through was a lactate test, which is a way of measuring a player's aerobic endurance by taking their blood from an earlobe at the end of each level.

With each level the speed and distance increases, while the blood sample shows the amount of lactic acid – if it is over a certain level, the player cannot continue any further.

Although the oldest member of the squad at 33, Milner is noted for his endurance and fitness.

And having won the lactate test on the first day of training last season, the midfielder was it again at this weekend.

Up against Joe Gomez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Adam Lallana, Joel Matip and Fabinho in his test, Milner demonstrated he has lost none of his appetite by storming away from Gomez on the final lap to win.

Certainly, when the remainder of the Liverpool squad return for training over the coming weeks, they'll know Milner remains the man to beat.
