Tens of thousands of Yemenis in the northern Jawf province face a dire humanitarian situation after being forcibly displaced by a Houthi military escalation. Many have fled to the nearby Marib province.
The Executive Unit for the Management of Internally Displaced People Camps in Yemen reported a massive influx of refugees with the number of refugee families leaving Jawf expected to reach 25,000 in the coming 24 hours.
The authority called on international organizations and humanitarian groups to intervene swiftly as the numbers are overwhelming local authorities in Marib.
According to Mohammad al-Maqrami, director of the Yemeni center for humanitarian studies and media, Jawf and Marib have witnessed the largest gathering of internally displaced people over the last six years, serving as a shelter for those fleeing Houthi-run territory.
Conflict erupted in Yemen after the Iran-backed Houthis militias staged a nationwide coup in 2014.
Maqrami added that the re-eruption of clashes in Jawf and the outskirts of Marib has left the lives of more than a million displaced people at risk.
He called on international organizations working in Yemen to rush to the aid of endangered civilians.
“Refugees have paid the most in this war as they have lost members of their families and their homes and have been left vulnerable to diseases in the absence of proper healthcare,”he noted, stressing the need to evacuate refugees that remain stuck in Jawf.
