241 coronavirus cases in Dublin confirmed in 24 hours as capital sees over 60% of total figures

Some 241 coronavirus cases were confirmed in Dublin over the past 24 hours.

The capital has been put under tighter restrictions than the rest of Ireland due to rising Covid-19 cases for three weeks.

Today's figure represents over 60% of the overall case numbers for the day (396), a similar proportion to Saturday and higher than both Thursday and Friday.

It's up from 166 in Dublin on Saturday, 116 on Friday and 119 on Thursday.

In comparison, just 36 cases were confirmed in Cork today.

No further deaths have been reported.

People have been asked not to leave or enter the county unless for essential reasons, such as work or education.

Those having visitors over may only have up to six from one other household, while no other types of indoor gatherings should take place.

The local surge in Dublin prompted Catholic Archbishop Diarmuid Martin to express concern yesterday at the "underestimation" of Covid-19 in the capital.

He said the spread of the virus has "reached serious levels" and "constitutes a real risk of radically increased infection within the community".

"In many cases, the increase in numbers is due to gatherings within households and communities," he said.

"That is the reason why the public health authorities are stressing the urgent need to reduce the number of contacts that each one of us has in this period.

"Reducing contacts requires a specific effort on the part of each of us to deliberately change the number of people with whom we would normally come into contact.

"This is as important in the current situation as the need for face masks, social distancing and hand-washing."
