24 things you'll only remember if you grew up in Llanelli

On the coast of West Wales, surrounded by an array of factories, picturesque coastlines and 450 acres of wetlands, lies the town of Llanelli.

Nestled 10 miles from the city of Swansea and 12 miles from Carmarthen, the town is known for its history in tinplate production and as the proud homeland to Welsh rugby club the Scarlets.

But if you were raised there, you probably know it for a whole host of other reasons.

Here's a few nostalgic memories of what it was like growing up as a ‘Turk.’

1. Every Friday night was spent awkwardly dancing or standing around the rim of Tom Pepper’s dance floor.

2. Today, as you begrudgingly hand over £10 for a ticket to the cinema, you probably reminisce about the days that you paid £3.50 for a seat at Elli Theatre.

3. Birthday parties were celebrated eating chicken nuggets and bouncing on the bouncy castle at Dai the Dragons.

4. You knew you’d met the height of fame if you’d made it into the Llanelli Star with your local sports team.

5. Every Saturday you met your friends at JJB’s...

6. ...to grab a quick cheese and onion pasty from Jenkins.

7. Then you would sit on the swings in 'People's Park' all day.

8. School trips consisted of feeding the ducks at Penclacwydd.

9. Or ‘orienteering’ at Pembrey Country Park, before giving up and fighting for turns on the toboggan.

10. Other than orienteering, Pembrey was your host for unauthorised camping trips and underage Stongbow swigging.

This is how close you are likely to be to a rat depending on where you live in Carmarthenshire

11. If you weren't drinking down Pembrey, you might have been sipping on WKDs under a tree in Parc Howard.

12. Clothes were solely bought from Generation, the bag kept and used to hold Thursday morning’s PE kit.

13. Unless you were looking for face paint or fancy dress, in that case you’d hit up ‘Trick or Treat.’

14. Savoy vs AJ’s chip shop was a bigger rivalry than Coedcae against Bryngwyn.

15. Falling on the astro turf pitch outside Graig College was a fate more painful than childbirth.

16. Your vicious PE teacher made you canoe in the baltic North Dock waters at least once.

17. Birthday’s did not get more sophisticated than a cheeky Korma at the Verandah.

18. By the time you reached adulthood, you would have grown tired of correcting people who call it Clen-eth-li.

How Llanelli's town centre has changed through the years

19. After 'mam' and 'dad' your first words were ‘Sosban fach, yn berwi ar y tan, Sosban fawr yn berwi ar y llawr, ar gath wedi scramo Johnny bach.’.

20. You supported the Scarlets at Stradey Park and shed a tear when they demolished it all.

21. Anyone who uttered the word ‘Ospreys’ was a satan worshipper.

22. Walking through the doors of Bar Luna, getting your shoes stuck on the sticky floors and ordering a VK marked your initiation into adulthood.

23. Much like the Grand Slam and the new Millennium you remember exactly where you were when Primark announced that they were opening a store in Trostre.

24. But as some of Llanelli’s most recognisable features fade away your passion and patriotism for the small town remains ‘Yma o Hyd’.
