24 things you definitely did on a night out in the Rhondda

A night out in the Rhondda has changed a lot over the past few years.

The area has seen a number of new bistros and restaurants opening, while many pubs have undergone extensive refurbishments.

Like a lot of other places in Wales, it's also said goodbye to some of its oldest and most well-loved pubs, as many of them have been forced to close their doors.

But - the memories stay the same.

Those of you who regularly hit the tiles in the Rhondda, will surely remember doing a few of these things:

1. Spent most of your night talking to strangers in the smoking area in Fagins...

2. ... then seen them out again next week and completely forgotten who they are

3. Went to Tynewydd Labour Club before it shut

(GoogleMaps)

Sadly, the club closed its doors in September 2015 - but, the massive hall was always a favourite for parties, nights out and rugby days.

4. Rug Sunday!

For years, hundreds of people from all over the Valley would spend the last Sunday of every month here with an all-dayer, live bands, sport and a pub crawl up the Valley.

5. Sat outside The Lion on a sunny day waiting for someone you know to drive past so you can wave

The Lion has recently undergone a massive refurbishment into a modern and award-winning pub. But one thing that hasn't changed is this tradition.

6. Tried to win £20 on the karaoke in Fagins on Thirsty Thursday...

(Lauren Jones)

7. ... after making the most of the £1.50 a pint in the New Inn. Thirstyyyy

(Google)

Thursday was a huge night in the Rhondda.

8. Got drunk in The Hibbs off a tenner

(Tyler Mears)

Ah, the good old days.

9. Went to The Galed before it was Ystrad Rugby Club

10. Gone out by 11am on international days so you can get a seat then ended up home eating a kebab by 6pm

(Tyler Mears)

Early start = early finish.

This practice still applies now, although some troopers still end up in the Banc (somehow).

11. Queued for 20 minutes to get in The Banc on bank holidays then had to pay a fiver to get in!

(Google)

A fiver seems quite decent these days - but, back then it was extortionate!

12. Listened to Dev da Funk up The Banc on a Friday...

(Lauren Jones)

13. ... after having one too many Jagerbombs watching a band in The New Inn

(Tyler Mears)

Two for a fiver - can't go wrong!

14. Walked from Fagins to The Banc, but tried to flag a lift the whole way up - even when you’re nearly there by Natwest

(Creative Commons)

"Can you drop us right outside please? It's raining"

15. Drunk in Treorchy Con before it was the White Dragon and The Bute before it was The Village Tavern (and then The Bute again)...

(Jaggery/Creative Commons)

16. ... and The Kit Kat Klub before it, er, shut down

Kids these days will never know...

17. Slipped at least once on the floor in The Banc

Seriously did they actually used to oil the floors in that place?

18. Three words: Luminous. Plastic. Cups

Pretty sure, they've now become a local tourist attraction.

19. Been thrown out of The Banc after leaving it too late to go outside for a cigarette

20. Then ended up in the petrol station for the rest of the night with your new best friend from Fagins

21. Planned a big night out to Cardiff and got eight people to go so you only have to pay a tenner each on the bus

(Geograph/Jaggery)

22. Gone on a coach to Swansea with the rest of the Rhondda to watch a DJ in Escape

We still remember the concrete floors now.

23. Had the Banc Stamp tattooed on your hand - or head - for the rest of the following week

(Lauren Jones)

Why does it NEVER come off!?

24. Taken at least 15 toilet selfies with people you don’t even know

"You're my new best friend!"
