24 people rescued from Irish mountain as treacherous weather and snow hit

24 people including 12 children had to be rescued from a popular climbing spot as treacherous weather conditions hit the country on Thursday.

A large group of people had to be escorted from The Nine Stones in Mount Leinster after becoming trapped.

There have been repeated warnings not to enter the area as freezing conditions sweep across the nation.

On Thursday eight cars had to be helped back down by County Council emergency teams, KCLR reports.

Both access roads have now been officially closed by the local authority to prevent others getting trapped in the snow and ice.

They’ll remain closed for the weekend at least.

Meanwhile Met Eireann is warning a 'severe frost' will hit this evening.

Today is set to start out with widespread frost and ice hitting part of the country and some wintry showers set to arrive.

Connacht, Ulster and Leinster is expected to bear the brunt of the wintry falls with a risk of some snow further north.

But the severe frost will creep in once it gets dark.

Tonight will be "extremely cold tonight with widespread frost and ice" but it will be dry, calm and clear in many areas, however some wintry showers will affect the east of Leinster.

Temperatures will plummet to between -2 and -8 degrees Celsius, with fog forming in some areas.

However the outlook for the weekend looks much more positive with a return to more near normal temperature but a forecaster has warned it will become more unsettled.
