24 Hours in A&E nurse at Nottingham QMC recalls treating man with 'highest heart rate she'd ever seen'

A Nottingham nurse says she is nervous but excited to see herself appear on 24 Hours in A&E. Clinical support worker Iona Mowat said she has been watching the Channel 4 show since she was 12 years old.

The 22-year-old will appear in episode two of the programme, which was filmed at Queen's Medical Centre in 2021 - the series the first to be shot outside of London. "I'm a bit nervous but the first episode was really good so I'm quite excited," Iona told Nottinghamshire Live.

"I've watched 24 Hours in A&E since I was about 12. I thought I'd just be in the background. When they contacted me saying they really want to do an episode with me I just couldn't turn it down, it's such a big thing for me.

"It's something I can look back on when I'm older to show the kids." Iona said she and about 20 family members will watch the show, which airs at 9pm on Tuesday, January 10, together from her home in West Bridgford.

"They're loving it. I'm in the pre-titles so the night after it started all my friends and family were messaging me," she said. "My family are driving to my house for when I finish work tonight so there will be about 20 of us who are going to get a pizza and watch it together. Which I think will be really, really lovely actually."

An interview with Iona features throughout the latest episode, in which she is also seen caring for Keith, a 58-year-old admitted with one of the highest heart rates the department has seen. "I remember that case so well, just because of how high his heat rate was," she recalled.

"It was the highest I'd ever seen and because of how chatty and really lovely he was, some patients you just remember." Iona, who is now studying to be children's nurse, revealed that her mum and American medical drama series Grey's Anatomy had played key roles in her joining QMC aged 18.

"I was watching Grey's Anatomy when I was 17 with my mum and she asked 'why don't you work in a hospital?' She said QMC were hiring so I should have a look," she said. "I applied for it and got the job and thought oh my God I love it. It's the best thing I've ever done. I think I've grown up very quickly. I couldn't see myself doing anything else."

The second episode of 24 Hours in A&E airs at 9pm on Channel 4 on Tuesday (January 10).
