24 hour car crime spree in Clydach sees van stolen and vehicles damaged

A series of vehicles were damaged and stolen overnight in a Swansea Valley community.

Up to five Clydach residents awoke on Tuesday morning to discover their vehicles had either been broken into or taken away.

Two cars and a works van were reported to have been broken into on Capel Road and a white Jeep was also reported to have been stolen from Vadre Road.

One other car was said to have been broken into as well, although not all are believed to have been reported to police.

Clydach councillor Gordon Walker said: "I really hope this isn’t a sign that this sort of behaviour is starting up again.

“We had a real problem with this a few years ago when cars were easier to break into.

“People work hard and need their cars and work vehicles. It is not fair to them if people treat them in this way.”

Police said three break-ins were reported to them, including one where a property is believed to have been entered first.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: "The first was believed to have happened at about 3am on July 16. A camera was stolen from a truck in Capel Road.

"The second relates to a car being broken into in Capel Road, this was reported to us at 1.25pm – nothing is believed to have been taken.

"The third is theft of a silver Nissan Xtrail from Vadre Road – this was reported to us at 5.40am and it is believed the thief entered a house to gain keys for the vehicle."

Police have not said whether the incidents are linked. However, detectives have issued a reminder for motorists to remove valuables from their vehicles overnight and to hide car keys from sight.
