22-year-old wakes up from coma after buggy overturns in horror crash in Ayia Napa

A 22-year-old has reportedly woken up from a coma after a buggy overturned in a horrific crash in Ayia Napa. Ellie Horrocks, from Westhoughton, was rushed to hospital after the incident in the popular resort on Monday (June 26).

Doctors put her into a medically-induced coma after she suffered a serious head injury and fractures to her spinal cord and clavicle in the collision.

Her auntie previously told the M.E.N that Ellie, who had moved to Cyprus in May to work in a bar, had hired a buggy to go and see the sunset on another part of the resort when she was forced to swerve to avoid an oncoming car, causing the buggy to overturn.

Ellie's mum Leanne immediately set up a fundraising page to help towards the cost of an air ambulance to fly her home, estimated to be around £60,000.

In a new public update on Monday (July 3), the family has announced Ellie is 'progressing' and has woken up from her coma, but still has 'a long road to recovery'. The 'amazing' and 'creative' 22-year-old was being treated in ICU at the Nicosia Hospital in Cyprus.

They said: "The family is pleased to inform you that Ellie has now come out of her coma. The doctor is pleased with her progress although she still has a long road of recovery ahead of her.

"Nicosia hospital are liaising with the family and a UK hospital in order that arrangements can be made to bring Ellie back home via air ambulance. We will update again as soon as we can. Thank you for your kind words and continued support."

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, her aunt Sarah said Ellie had moved to Cyprus in May to work in a bar and 'experience life'.

"She's young, so she likes going out with her friends, she's got loads and loads of friends, but she's also just a very creative person," Sarah said. "She's a really, really, well-loved girl."
