22 Covid hotspots in Nottinghamshire as third wave driven by Delta variant starts

There are 22 Covid hotspots in Nottinghamshire as the third wave takes a hold of the county, new data shows.

Covid hotspots with the highest number of cases are Arboretum, Forest and Trent University, City Centre and Trent Bridge, Gamston and Holme Pirrepoint and Lady Bay.

City Centre and Trent Bridge saw 25 new cases confirmed in the seven days to June 13.

It comes as Public Health England bosses said Nottinghamshire is now in the 'early stages' of a third wave.

Coronavirus cases in all boroughs and districts, particularly Nottingham and Rushcliffe, have surged in the last week.

Jonathan Gribbin, public health director for the county, said: "If we go back several months ago in this meeting and other contexts we were hearing about modelling from SAGE which was showing that in all likelihood during this calendar year we would see a third wave.

"At that time, that modelling didn't even account for the emergence of a new variant.

"What we now see across the United Kingdom is a general increase in rates, driven strongly by this new Delta variant which is now the dominant variant, and it is considerably more easily passed on than the Alpha variant.

"Nottinghamshire, together with the rest of the country, now finds itself at what looks like to be the early stages of a third wave."
