21 photos that prove the North East is the perfect place to celebrate Christmas

In the North East we are fiercely proud of our region - and why wouldn't we be?

We have the friendliest people, stunning cities and gorgeous scenery, our grub is top notch and we know how to throw a party.

So naturally, the North East is the place to be at Christmas.

If you don't believe us, we have compiled a gallery photos which prove our point - and don't worry we won't be smug when you change your mind.

These photos show our Christmas market, which has over 50 stalls this year. It features windmills, wooden stalls and an Après Ski bar; which with biting Toon temperatures, you'd be forgiven for believing you really were in the Alps.

But that doesn't put us off as we're known for braving the cold and not wearing coats on nights out.

The chill also doesn't stop us from queueing up to see the famous Fenwick's Christmas window.

This year the curtain was drawn to reveal a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory theme - and hundreds turned out to witness the grand display.

In amongst our joyful Christmas gallery is one of the most incredible winter sunrises over the coast in Tynemouth. Imagine waking up to that view on Christmas morning?

If that wasn't enough, we also have the magnificent Durham Lumiere festival which takes place every two years.

Illuminated artworks are dotted around the city and projections are displayed on buildings such as; Durham Cathedral.

We are also home to the largest outdoor museum in England. Beamish sees history brought to life from the 19th and 20th centuries.

This open-air attraction, which is set over 300 acres of Durham countryside, is brilliant at celebrating Christmas.

In November they host a parade and festivities in the 1900s town to turn on their Christmas lights.
