21 Jump Street spin-off: Tiffany Haddish and Awkwafina eyed for female-led film

Tiffany Haddish is currently in talks to star in Sony's female-driven 21 Jump Street spin-off.

According to Collider, the Girls Trip star could potentially be joined by Awkwafina, who made a splash this year with Ocean's 8 and Crazy Rich Asians and is currently the top of the studio's list.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse director Rodney Rothman is both writing and directing the spin-off, having worked on the script for 22 Jump Street, with the directors of the first two films, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, expected to return as producers.

Haddish, 39, isn't expected to play an undercover cop infiltrating a high school this time, but will likely pose as a teacher.

Whatever her role, it's rumoured Sony is looking to rebuild its Jump Street franchise around the actor, after one of her latest vehicles, Night School with Kevin Hart, grossed over $100m worldwide.

The film is expected to join the studio's growing slate of female-led projects, including Charlie's Angels and Greta Gerwig's Little Women.

It also finally puts to rest any hopes of the previously planned Jump Street/Men in Black mash-up, as the latter is getting a reboot next year, with Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson in the lead.
