21 For 2021 College Football Topics, No. 17: Letdown Game For Every Power Five Team

21 for 2021 College Football Topics, No. 17: The letdown or sandwich game for every Power Five team.

Fans assume a win, the players see it as just another game, and coaches lose sleep over everyone not taking it seriously.

They’re overlooked by the general public, and then they lead SportsCenter when the upset happens.

They’re the letdown games, or maybe they’re the sandwiches – the games in between the two supposedly more important, bigger battles.

On each Power Five team’s slate, there’s at least one game that should be a mail-it-in moment, but a bad day could screw up the entire season.

These all should be easy wins, but …

You’ve been warned.

Big Ten | Big 12 | Pac-12 | SEC

ACC Atlantic

Boston College Eagles

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at Temple, Sept. 18
Game Before: at UMass
Game After
: Missouri

There won’t be any problems against UMass the week before, but it’ll at least generate local interest. The focus will be on the big statement moment against Missouri coming up, but Temple should be more dangerous this year, especially at home.
Full Schedule Analysis

Clemson Tigers

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Wake Forest, Nov. 20
Game Before: UConn
Game After
: at South Carolina

At this point, Clemson should have the ACC Championship and more in its sights, but it’ll have to gear it up for the ACC regular season finale against the Demon Deacons. The UConn game will be a scrimmage, and all focus might be on the return of the rivalry date with South Carolina.
Full Schedule Analysis

Florida State Seminoles

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at Boston College, Nov. 20
Game Before: Miami
Game After
: at Florida

The Noles have a whole slew of sandwich/letdown games, but Boston College will be the most dangerous moment. Not only will it be in between the home showdown against Miami and with Florida to follow, but the Florida team has to go to Boston in late November.
Full Schedule Analysis

Louisville Cardinals

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Syracuse, Nov. 13
Game Before: Clemson
Game After
: at Duke

It’s not just that the Cardinals have to play Clemson the week before facing Syracuse, and it’s not really about going to Duke the week after. It’s about the timing, with the Duke game coming up five days after hosting SU and with the Kentucky showdown looming.
Full Schedule Analysis

NC State Wolfpack

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Furman, Sept. 18
Game Before: at Mississippi State
Game After
: Clemson

It’ll take something special for the Paladins from the FCS world to pull off the upset over NC State, but the Pack will be coming off the fun date against Mike Leach and the Mississippi State offense, and the ACC opener against Clemson is up next.
Full Schedule Analysis

Syracuse Orange

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Wake Forest, Oct. 9
Game Before: at Florida State
Game After
: Clemson

It’s not like Syracuse is going to overlook anyone, but before going to Florida State it has to deal with a Liberty team that one last year’s game in the dome, and Clemson comes the week after dealing with the Demon Deacons.
Full Schedule Analysis

Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Duke, Oct. 30
Game Before: at Army
Game After
: at North Carolina

Playing two road games in the second half of the season is tough enough, but the Duke game comes after dealing with the Army offense – defensive linemen legs are never happy after stopping the option attack.
Full Schedule Analysis

ACC 2021 Predictions: Spring Version

ACC Coastal

Duke Blue Devils

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Kansas, Sept. 25
Game Before: Northwestern
Game After
: at North Carolina

Duke will be in for a battle against Northwestern at home with a chance to make a statement, and opening the ACC season down the road at North Carolina is going to be the focus. Losing to what should be a miserable Kansas team would be devastating.
Full Schedule Analysis

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Boston College, Nov. 13
Game Before: at Miami
Game After
: at Notre Dame

Call this as much of a letdown moment as it is a sandwich. Georgia Tech can’t drop a game against anyone, but the visit from BC is the calm before the final storm with Notre Dame and Georgia finishing things up.
Full Schedule Analysis

Miami Hurricanes

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Appalachian State, Sept. 11
Game Before: Alabama (in Atlanta)
Game After
: Michigan State

Overall the schedule isn’t all that bad. However, the Canes should be beaten up a bit after starting out against Alabama and with a fun game against Michigan State to follow. Appalachian State will be good enough to pull this off.
Full Schedule Analysis

North Carolina Tar Heels

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Georgia State, Sept. 11
Game Before: at Virginia Tech
Game After
: Virginia

The Tar Heels have a whole lot of big fish to fry, and that includes dealing with the two Virginia teams to start ACC play. The two games are wrapped around a dangerous home opener against a Georgia State team loaded with veterans and a strong offense.
Full Schedule Analysis

Pitt Panthers

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Western Michigan, Sept. 18
Game Before: at Tennessee
Game After
: New Hampshire

A letdown more than a sandwich game, the Panthers will be coming off a trip to Tennessee. One way or another, it’ll be hard to get up for a Western Michigan team with just enough talent to win the MAC.
Full Schedule Analysis

Virginia Cavaliers

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at Pitt, Nov. 20
Game Before: Notre Dame
Game After
: Virginia Tech

Going to Pitt won’t be any sort of a letdown, but between the home date with Notre Dame and with Virginia Tech to finish, it’s about as sandwichy a game as it gets.
Full Schedule Analysis

Virginia Tech Hokies

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Middle Tennessee, Sept. 11
Game Before: North Carolina
Game After
: at West Virginia

Starting the season off against North Carolina will set the tone either way, and going to West Virginia will be a big statement moment for the season. Middle Tennessee shouldn’t be a threat, but the Hokies can’t just mail it in.

Big Ten East

Indiana Hoosiers

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at Maryland, Oct. 30
Game Before: Ohio State
Game After
: at Michigan

It’s hard to get more jammed into a Big Ten sandwich situation than playing a team in between dates against Ohio State and Michigan. Maryland will be a letdown game for the Hoosiers, too,
Full Schedule Analysis

Maryland Terrapins

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Kent State, Sept. 25
Game Before: at Illinois
Game After
: Iowa

The Big Ten season just gets going with a trip to Illinois and then the FlashFast offense of Kent State comes to town. The notoriously inconsistent Terps might be looking ahead to Iowa and then Ohio State.
Full Schedule Analysis

Michigan Wolverines

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at Maryland, Nov. 20
Game Before: at Penn State
Game After
: Ohio State

There are a few potential letdown/sandwich moments for the Wolverines, but sticking the late November trip to Maryland in between Penn State and Ohio State will be a motivational issue.
Full Schedule Analysis

Michigan State Spartans

Letdown/Sandwich Game: WKU, Oct. 2
Game Before: Nebraska
Game After
: at Rutgers

It’s not like the date with Rutgers is a circle game on the calendar, but coming off of games against Miami and Nebraska should signal a letdown alert against WKU and it’s potentially dangerous D.
Full Schedule Analysis

Ohio State Buckeyes

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Tulsa, Sept. 18
Game Before: Oregon
Game After
: Akron

The schedule is so soft and mushy that there really isn’t a true sandwich game – Purdue is close coming after Penn State and Nebraska and before Michigan State and Michigan. It’s going to take something special, though, to get up for Tulsa after starting the season against Minnesota and Oregon.
Full Schedule Analysis

Penn State Nittany Lions

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Ball State, Sept. 11
Game Before: at Wisconsin
Game After
: Auburn

The Nittany Lions should be able to take care of the defending MAC champs, but it might not be a breeze to get up for coming in between the season/Big Ten opener at Wisconsin and the date with Auburn.
Full Schedule Analysis

Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Delaware, Sept. 18
Game Before: at Syracuse
Game After
: at Michigan

Delaware is one of the better FCS teams, and it’s going to have a whole run of spring football to tune up for the season. Rutgers can’t take anyone lightly, but with the Big Ten opener at Michigan coming up, and coming off the date at Syracuse, look out.
Full Schedule Analysis

Big Ten 2021 Predictions: Spring Version

Big Ten West

Illinois Fighting Illini

Letdown/Sandwich Game: UTSA, Sept. 4
Game Before: Nebraska
Game After
: at Virginia

The Bret Bielema era should get off to an interesting start one way or another with the Big Ten and season opener against Nebraska to kick things off. Going to Virginia will be fun, and in between is a sneaky-decent UTSA team that should go bowling.
Full Schedule Analysis

Iowa Hawkeyes

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Illinois, Nov. 20
Game Before: Minnesota
Game After
: at Nebraska

The Hawkeyes have several potential letdown moments – like Kent State the week after going to Iowa State – but Illinois could be the bigger problem. It’s Senior Day, but it’s coming off the rivalry game against Minnesota and with the regular season finale at Nebraska just six days later.
Full Schedule Analysis

Minnesota Golden Gophers

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Miami University, Sept. 11
Game Before: Ohio State
Game After
: at Colorado

The RedHawks should be just good enough to be in the thick of the MAC race, and Minnesota is going to be just off enough early on to blow it in what needs to be a layup home game. Coming off the opener against Ohio State and with a trip to Colorado up next, there can’t be a misfire.
Full Schedule Analysis

Nebraska Cornhuskers

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Buffalo, Sept. 11
Game Before: at Illinois
Game After
: at Oklahoma

There’s a week off before dealing with UB, but one way or another, Nebraska might not be all that fired up for the home opener after starting the Big Ten season with the Illini and with everyone talking about the trip to Oklahoma a week later.
Full Schedule Analysis

Northwestern Wildcats

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Ohio, Sept. 25
Game Before: at Duke
Game After
: at Nebraska

Northwestern has a history of issues with home games against MAC teams, and it’s not like this one against Ohio is early enough in the season to ensure full and undivided attention. The Cats get a trip to Nebraska the week followed by a week off.
Full Schedule Analysis

Purdue Boilermakers

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Illinois, Sept. 25
Game Before: at Notre Dame
Game After
: Minnesota

It’s not just that the Boilermakers will be coming off the big national game against Notre Dame, it’s also that Minnesota is right after. It’s not like it was the Gophers’ fault, but that’s a revenge game for Purdue after last year’s controversial finish.
Full Schedule Analysis

Wisconsin Badgers

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at Rutgers, Nov. 6
Game Before: Iowa
Game After
: Northwestern

Think the blip against Illinois two years ago – the Badgers were rolling before the shocking road upset. Iowa will be a huge game in the Big Ten West race, and Northwestern should be a factor, too. In between is the trip to deal with the Scarlet Knights.

Big 12

Baylor Bears

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at Texas State, Sept. 4
Game Before: None
Game After
: Texas Southern

There really isn’t any sort of a letdown or sandwich game coming off an awful 2020 season, but the opener against Texas State on the road might be slightly tricky. The Bobcats will have a funky offense that could at least make it interesting.
Full Schedule Analysis

Iowa State Cyclones

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at UNLV, Sept. 18
Game Before: Iowa
Game After
: at Baylor

The Cyclones will be coming off of two emotionally-charged local games – Northern Iowa and Iowa – to start the season, and the Big 12 campaign starts up the following week at Baylor. Going to Vegas in between should be fun – even if the players don’t get to do the town like most people do.
Full Schedule Analysis

Kansas Jayhawks

Letdown/Sandwich Game: South Dakota, Sept. 4
Game Before: None
Game After
: at Coastal Carolina

Really, Kansas? You’re going to get threezied by Coastal Carolina? The week before dealing with the Chanticleers for the third year in a row, and with Baylor right after that, the new era of Kansas football starts out against a South Dakota team that will have a full spring of warm up games under its belt – for whatever that’s worth.
Full Schedule Analysis

Kansas State Wildcats

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Nevada, Sept. 18
Game Before: Southern Illinois
Game After
: at Oklahoma State

Nevada isn’t a sandwich or letdown game as much as it is the hopeful calm before the storm with Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Iowa State next. However, the Wolf Pack will have the offense and team to not only win this, but the Mountain West title.
Full Schedule Analysis

Oklahoma Sooners

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at Baylor, Nov. 13
Game Before: Texas Tech
Game After
: Iowa State

If things go according to form, Oklahoma should be rolling by mid-November, and Baylor shouldn’t. Focus-wise, the Sooners will be coming off a two week break, and the finishing kick against Iowa State and Oklahoma State comes after the trip to Waco.
Full Schedule Analysis

Big 12 2021 Predictions: Spring Version

Oklahoma State Cowboys

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Kansas, Oct. 30
Game Before: at Iowa State
Game After
: at Kansas State

Kansas will be the exhale moment for the Cowboys as the home game in a run of three road games in four weeks. With Texas and Iowa State before and West Virginia right after, the energy might not be there for the free-space on the slate.
Full Schedule Analysis

Texas Longhorns

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Louisiana, Sept. 4
Game Before: None
Game After
: at Arkansas

Ask 2020 Iowa State about how much fun it is to play Louisiana at home to open up a season. The Steve Sarkisian era opens up with game after game after game with an interesting hook. At Arkansas, the in-state games against Rice, Texas Tech and TCU, and the Oklahoma showdown will all be a big deal, but the Ragin’ Cajuns are going to be a problem, too.
Full Schedule Analysis

TCU Horned Frogs

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Baylor, Nov. 6
Game Before: at Kansas State
Game After
: at Oklahoma State

TCU will be coming off a run of three road games in four weeks, and Baylor is supposed to be the relative break with Oklahoma State and Iowa State on the road over the last three weeks. It’s not Senior Day – that’s Kansas two weeks later – so there won’t be that extra motivation.
Full Schedule Analysis

Texas Tech Red Raiders

Letdown/Sandwich Game: FIU, Sept. 18
Game Before: Stephen F. Austin
Game After
: at Texas

FIU is supposedly the layup game. It shouldn’t be an issue if the Red Raiders are okay, but that comes after likely shootouts with Houston and Stephen F. Austin before and with the Big 12 season starting against Texas to follow.
Full Schedule Analysis

West Virginia Mountaineers

Letdown/Sandwich Game: LIU, Sept. 11
Game Before: at Maryland
Game After
: Virginia Tech

West Virginia won’t lose to the Sharks. LIU is just getting its footing in the FCS world, but it’s the one big sandwich moment on the Mountaineers’ schedule – the Kansas game finishes up the season. The year starts at Maryland and Virginia Tech and at Oklahoma are right after.

Pac-12 North

California Golden Bears

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Washington State, Oct. 2
Game Before: at Washington
Game After
: at Oregon

Cal doesn’t get a whole lot of scheduling breaks its way, and the biggest knee to the junk is the assignment of both the Washington and Oregon games on the road. There’s a week off before dealing with the Ducks, but the Bears have to face Wazzu before the break.
Full Schedule Analysis

Oregon Ducks

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Colorado, Oct. 30
Game Before: at UCLA
Game After
: at Washington

If Oregon plays up to its talent level – not necessarily a given – it should be at worst 6-1 before hosting the Buffs. No matter what, the trip to Washington will have something to do with the Pac-12 North race. Going to UCLA before getting Colorado doesn’t help.
Full Schedule Analysis

Oregon State Beavers

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Hawaii, Sept. 11
Game Before: at Purdue
Game After
: Idaho

Call this an expanded sandwich. After starting the season at Purdue, Hawaii is going to be a fight. There shouldn’t be any issues with Idaho, but after that starts the Pac-12 season against USC on the road, followed up by Washington and at Washington State.
Full Schedule Analysis

Stanford Cardinal

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at Vanderbilt, Sept. 18
Game Before: at USC
Game After
: UCLA

There really isn’t a chance for a letdown against a schedule of all Power Five programs, but the trip to Vanderbilt is a relative break. It’s coming off the date at USC and before dealing with UCLA and Oregon, and it’ll be the third straight game away from home to start the season.
Full Schedule Analysis

Washington Huskies

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Arkansas State, Sept. 18
Game Before: at Michigan
Game After
: Cal

Different Arkansas State team, different head coach, but Butch Jones has a good group in place. The Red Wolves shocked Kansas State last season, and this time around the program has a shot to do something big against a Washington team coming off a trip to Michigan and will the Pac-12 season starting the week after.
Full Schedule Analysis

Washington State Cougars

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Arizona, Nov. 19
Game Before: at Oregon
Game After

Pac-12 South

Arizona Wildcats

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Northern Arizona, Sept. 18
Game Before: San Diego State
Game After
: at Oregon

Arizona can’t afford to take anyone lightly, and this will be the biggest moment of the year for the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona. Coming off the start of the Jedd Fisch era with BYU and San Diego State, and with a trip to Oregon up next, there can’t be a miss here.
Full Schedule Analysis

Arizona State Sun Devils

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Washington State, Oct. 30
Game Before: at Utah
Game After

There’s a week off in the middle of the sandwich, but the Sun Devils have to get up for the Cougars in between their two biggest games on the Pac-12 South slate.
Full Schedule Analysis

Colorado Buffaloes

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Oregon State, Nov. 6
Game Before: at Oregon
Game After
: at UCLA

The Buffs have a relatively tough first half of the season without a ton of sure-thing wins, and they close out at UCLA, Washington, at Utah. There can’t be a misfire against Oregon State, but they’re coming off road games at Cal and Oregon.
Full Schedule Analysis

UCLA Bruins

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Fresno State, Sept. 18
Game Before: LSU

On the plus side, there’s a week off to get ready for the Bulldogs. However, it’s coming off a visit from LSU and comes right before the start of the Pac-12 season with a. date at Stanford.
Full Schedule Analysis

USC Trojans

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Arizona, Oct. 30
Game Before: at Arizona State
Game After
: at Notre Dame

It’s not just that the Trojans have to deal with Arizona at home in late October, and it’s not that the dangerous game at Arizona State is right after. It’s that it comes after going to Notre Dame and with the South showdown against Utah before that.
Full Schedule Analysis

Utah Utes

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at San Diego State, Sept. 18

Florida Gators

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at USF, Sept. 11
Game Before: Florida Atlantic
Game After
: Alabama

This is the ultimate focus week. The Florida Atlantic game to start the season shouldn’t be a problem in theory, but Willie Taggart’s team will at least be fired up to make it tough. The Alabama game in Week 3 might make or break the season before it gets going. USF shouldn’t be an issue on the road, but it’ll be impossible to not start planning for the Tide.

Georgia Bulldogs

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Kentucky, Oct. 16
Game Before: at Auburn
Game After
: Florida (in Jacksonville)

There’s always a big concerns whenever a game is between the two rivalry moments. With Clemson to start the season, there’s a shot the Dawgs can’t afford a loss the rest of the way. Going to Auburn will be interesting, and there’s a week off before facing the Gators, but there can’t be a slip against UK.

Kentucky Wildcats

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at South Carolina, Sept. 25
Game Before: Chattanooga
Game After

Kentucky doesn’t have a true sandwich game, and the whole second half of the season if full of letdown concerns, but the South Carolina is a wee bit different. Call this a Do NOT Look Ahead game, because after going to Columbia it’s Florida, LSU, at Georgia.

Missouri Tigers

Letdown/Sandwich Game: South Carolina, Nov. 13
Game Before: at Georgia
Game After
: Florida

Missouri isn’t strong enough to disrespect South Carolina – even a rebuilding South Carolina – but it’s a late season dog days game sandwiched between the stars of the East. Going to Georgia won’t be fun, and finishing up the season with Florida is rough, so there HAS to be a win over …

South Carolina Gamecocks

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Vanderbilt, Oct. 16
Game Before: at Tennessee
Game After
: at Texas A&M

Vanderbilt is just about everyone’s letdown game in the SEC, but for a South Carolina team that’s going to need every win it can possibly get to go bowling, there can’t be a home mistake. The game comes just before going to Texas A&M and right after dealing with another team that will desperately need the win …

Full Schedule Analysis

Vanderbilt Commodores

Letdown/Sandwich Game: UConn, Oct. 2
Game Before: Georgia
Game After
: at Florida

It’ll be asking a ton for Vanderbilt to be competitive against the top teams in the East, much less win them. The UConn game will come after dealing with Georgia and Stanford at home, and right before going to Florida. The Commodores will see UConn as a light scrimmage.

SEC 2021 Predictions: Spring Version

SEC West

Alabama Crimson Tide

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Mercer, Sept. 11
Game Before: Miami (in Atlanta)
Game After
: at Florida

Of course Alabama isn’t going to lose to Mercer, but there’s one interesting aspect of it – it’s in early September. The scrimmage FCS game for Bama is usually in late November – preferably before Auburn – and now New Mexico State is the layup on November 13th. Mercer is the breather between Miami to open things up and the trip to Florida.
Full Schedule Analysis

Arkansas Razorbacks

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Georgia Southern, Sept. 18
Game Before: Texas
Game After
: Texas A&M (in Arlington)

No one likes playing an option team before having to deal with a big game the week after, but that’s exactly what the Hogs have to do. The Texas game will be interesting, the Texas A&M date in Jerry World will be fun, and there’s a trip to Georgia right after that. Georgia Southern has the O to make things even worse.
Full Schedule Analysis

Auburn Tigers

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Georgia State, Sept. 25
Game Before: at Penn State
Game After
: at LSU

It’s going to be a rebuilding season no matter what for new head man Bryan Harsin, but it’ll be rough if the Tigers can’t get by a – don’t laugh – dangerous Georgia State team. AU goes to Penn State before and LSU after, and then faces Georgia.
Full Schedule Analysis

LSU Tigers

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at Ole Miss, Oct. 23
Game Before: Florida
Game After
: at Alabama

There’s a week off before the Alabama game, but going to Ole Miss comes at the end of a run of eight straight games to start the season. It also comes right after dealing with Florida.
Full Schedule Analysis

Ole Miss Rebels

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Liberty, Nov. 6
Game Before: at Auburn
Game After
: Texas A&M

There are several dangerous games to get up for, but Liberty is going to be just good enough to pull off the win. Throw in the return of Hugh Freeze to his old stomping grounds, and the spotlight will be on. The problem? Besides the Flames being that good, Ole Miss plays at Tennessee, LSU and at Auburn before, and Texas A&M right after.
Full Schedule Analysis

Mississippi State Bulldogs

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at Vanderbilt, Oct. 23
Game Before: Alabama
Game After
: Kentucky

Mississippi State is going to have to exhale at some point. Leading up to the trip to Vandy is … NC State, at Memphis, LSU, at Texas A&M, Alabama. There’s a week off before facing the Tide, but it’s still going to be a grind.
Full Schedule Analysis

Texas A&M Aggies

Letdown/Sandwich Game: South Carolina, Oct. 23
Game Before: at Missouri
Game After
: Auburn

This is more about the timing than the date with South Carolina being a sandwich or even a letdown. The Aggies don’t get their week off until late October after playing the Gamecocks. Leading up to that, A&M has to play Alabama and go to Missouri – it’s a true dog days of the season game.
