20yo killed in early-morning monkey bike crash

The 20-year-old died at the scene.

A young man has been killed in an early-morning crash while riding a mini motorbike, or monkey bike, north-west of Melbourne.

Police said the 20-year-old veered off Kuranjang Drive in Kuranjang, near Melton, and hit a fence about 4:30am.

He died at the scene.

Investigations are underway into the exact circumstances of the crash.

Police have previously spoken out against monkey bikes - which are small, low-powered motorcycles - calling them a "huge problem".

Caleb Jakobsson was jailed for seven years in May after killing a mother of two when he ran into her while riding a mini motorbike through a pedestrian crossing in Melbourne's south-east.

Last year, a 16-year-old boy was hospitalised after crashing his bike into a car at Dallas.

According to VicRoads, mini motorbikes are not allowed to be ridden on public roads, footpaths or nature strips because they do not meet the standards to be registered as a vehicle.
