The 20th Biennale of Sydney, curated by Stephanie Rosenthal, focuses on how the distinction between virtual and physical worlds has become ever more elusive. The title “The future is already here – it’s just not evenly distributed” is inspired by a quote from science fiction author William Gibson .
The Biennale is structured in thematic clusters with each participating venue designated as an embassy for a particular collection of thought. Sydney’s mortuary station, which once transported the dead and their mourning family to Chippendale and Rookwood stations, will be transformed into the aptly named Embassy of Transition.
The Victorian era train station, built in 13th century Gothic style, will present artists whose works engage with the cycles of life and death, as well as rites of passage. Marco Chiandetti and Charwei Tsai are among those who will exhibit their works.
