The 20th Biennale of Sydney, curated by Stephanie Rosenthal, focuses on how the distinction between virtual and physical worlds has become ever more elusive. The title “The future is already here – it’s just not evenly distributed” is inspired by a quote from science fiction author William Gibson .

The Biennale is structured in thematic clusters with each participating venue designated as an embassy for a particular collection of thought. Cockatoo Island will host the Embassy of the Real with artists such as Korakrit Arunanondchai, William Forsythe, Camille Henrot, Lee Bul, Chiharu Shiota, Ming Wong, and Xu Zhen exhibiting their works.

The former convict settlement and shipyard will offer a space for artists to consider how we perceive reality in our increasingly digitised era, looking at the virtual, the physical, and the human body.
