The 20th Biennale of Sydney, curated by Stephanie Rosenthal, focuses on how the distinction between virtual and physical worlds has become ever more elusive. The title “The future is already here – it’s just not evenly distributed” is inspired by a quote from science fiction author William Gibson .
The Biennale is structured in thematic clusters with each participating venue designated as an embassy for a particular collection of thought. Artspace in Woolloomooloo, a former artist squat, is now a leading international residency-based contemporary art centre.
Artspace will become the Embassy of Non-Participation for the Biennale, with artist duo Karen Mirza and Brad Butler taking over the space. They will consider how the act of non-participation might be an active, critical position.
