£20k raised for homeless woman who gave birth to twins outside Cambridge University college

Well-wishers have raised more than £20,000 for a homeless woman who gave birth to twins in a Cambridge street near Trinity College.

The woman was helped by passers-by when she went into labour near one of the wealthiest colleges in the city.

She was taken to the Rosie Hospital with her newborns shortly before 7am on December 23.

It is believed she had given birth at around 29 weeks' gestation, or 11 weeks' early.

A JustGiving page was set up and has already passed its target - and currently stands at £22,863.

Jess Agar, who set up the page, said: "Cambridge is a place of extraordinary inequality.

"I've started this fundraiser to see if we can get a little going towards helping her care for herself and her children at the darkest, coldest time of the year."

She said she was "currently in discussions with several organisations who can help me work out the safest, and most helpful way to ensure this money is used to bring positive change to these peoples' lives."

A Shelter report found that a child in the UK becomes homeless, statistically, every eight minutes.
