Sixteen stadiums in Mexico, Canada and the United States will stage the games during the first 48-team World Cup. RFI looks at the venues to be used between 11 June and 19 July.

Vancouver will have to wait for the second round of group matches to see Canada in action.

The national squad, who open their Group B campaign against Bosnia & Herzegovina on 12 June in Toronto, play at BC Place in Vancouver against Qatar on 18 June, before concluding their group stage at the same venue on 24 June against Switzerland.

The stadium, with a reduced capacity of just over 48,000, will host seven matches in total, including a last-32 knockout tie on 2 July.

That game will feature the Group B winners — Canada, Switzerland, Qatar or Bosnia & Herzegovina — against one of the best third-placed sides in the 48-team tournament. A last-16 game follows on 7 July.

"Hosting World Cup matches will boost tourism and generate significant economic benefits as football fans from around the world discover why our province is such an attractive destination and a prime location for investment," said David Eby, Premier of British Columbia. "We are ready to welcome the world for this major event in British Columbia, while supporting local businesses and jobs."

Indoor arena

BC Place opened on 19 June 1983 as an indoor structure with an air-supported roof. After the 2010 Winter Olympics, this was replaced with a cable-supported retractable roof, similar to the system used at what was then the Commerzbank-Arena in Frankfurt.

The fabric roof retracts into a pod at the centre of the opening, above the suspended videoboard. The stadium will be known as Vancouver Stadium during the World Cup and features the second largest centre-hung high-definition scoreboard in North America.

Once the World Cup concludes, BC Place will return to hosting the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League and the Vancouver Whitecaps of MLS.
