2025 new movies: release schedule for this year's new movies

2025 new movies graphic.

2024 at the movies took movie fans from Arrakis to Oz (and a bunch of other places in between). Where will we go in 2025? Get an idea with our full look at the 2025 release schedule for new movies.

We're keeping track of all of the new films coming out in 2025 (exclusively on the big screen, no streaming only titles here), from the big franchises — including the latest entries in the MCU to Wicked: For Good — to more adult-driven movies or family-friendly titles. We'll keep this list updated as new movies are added or in the event that release dates shift so you can know exactly what is coming out in a given week and what exciting movies are on their way.

Check out our complete rundown of the 2025 new movies release schedule directly below.

May

David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh and Wyatt Russell in Thunderbolts (Image credit: Marvel)

Fight or Flight

Josh Hartnett in Fight or Flight (Image credit: Sky Cinema)
  • Release date: May 9
  • Cast: Josh Hartnett, Katee Sackhoff
  • Director: James Madigan

Josh Hartnett takes to the skies in this indie action movie, as he plays a mercenary hired to kill a target. He tracks her onto a plane, but when he realizes that there are others on the plane looking to kill them both, he must find a way to keep both of them alive.

Friendship

Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd in Friendship (Image credit: Spencer Pazer/Courtesy of A24)
  • Release date: May 9 (US)
  • Cast: Tim Robinson, Paul Rudd, Kate Mara, Jack Dylan Grazer
  • Director: Andrew DeYoung

Tim Robinson has a very specific brand of comedy, which we've seen in TV shows like Detroiters and I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson. Now he gets to star in the movie Friendship alongside Paul Rudd, which features a trailer that makes it look like a dark, psychological thriller, but features quotes from critics calling it one of the funniest movies of the year. This one should be interesting.

Juliet & Romeo

Clara Rugaard and Jamie Ward kiss in Juliet & Romeo (Image credit: Briarcliff Entertainment)
  • Release date: May 9
  • Cast: Clara Rugaard, Jamie Ward, Jason Isaacs, Rebel Wilson, Rupert Everett, Dan Fogler, Derek Jacobi, Rupert Graves, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo
  • Director: Timothy Scott Bogart

Shakespeare's tragic love story gets a refresh, going away from the Bard's classic words to a period depiction (shot in the part of Italy where the play takes play) but infused with modern pop songs.

Shadow Force

Kerry Washington in Shadow Force (Image credit: Juan Pablo Gutierrez/Lionsgate)
  • Release date: May 9
  • Cast: Kerry Washington, Omar Sy, Mark Strong, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Cliff “Method Man” Smith
  • Director: Joe Carnahan

Kerry Washington becomes an action star in the new movie Shadow Force. She stars along Omar Sy as former spies that broke away from their highly dangerous former employer in order to start a family, but now must fight for the the new lives they created when they are discovered. Joe Carnahan, who has directed a number of under-the-radar action gems co-wrote and directed the movie.

Watch the Skies

Inez Dahl Torhaug and Jesper Barkselius in Watch the Skies (Image credit: XYZ Films)
  • Release date: May 9
  • Cast: Inez Dahl Torhaug, Jesper Barkselius, Sara Shirpey
  • Director: Victor Danell

Watch the Skies is a sci-fi/UFO movie from Sweden that is making movie history, as it is the first movie that uses artificial intelligence technology to dub the movie in English, which reportedly will make the movie look as if the characters are naturally speaking in English, rather than dubbing that clearly does not match an actor's mouth, and require no subtitles. If this proves to be successful, it could change how foreign movies are delivered for English-speaking audiences.

Final Destination: Bloodlines

Tony Todd in Final Destination Bloodlines (Image credit: Courtesy of Warner Bros.)
  • Release date: May 16
  • Cast: Brec Bassinger, Teo Briones, Richard Harmon, Max Lloyd Jones, Owen Patrick Joyner, Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Rya Kihlstedt, Tinpo Lee, Anna Lore, Gabrielle Rose, April Amber Telek, Alex Zahara
  • Director:  Zach Lipovsky & Adam B. Stein

You can't escape Final Destinations, as the horror franchise is back with its sixth installment. This one goes generational, as an entire family becomes the target of death after an incident where the family matriarch shouldn't have survived many years ago.

Hurry Up Tomorrow

Jenna Ortega in Hurry Up Tomorrow (Image credit: Lionsgate)
  • Release date: May 16
  • Cast: The Weeknd, Jenna Ortega, Barry Keoghan
  • Director: Trey Edwards Shults

Trey Edwards Shults first two movies have been widely acclaimed — It Comes at Night and Waves — so there would be excitement for whatever he did next. But the fact that his next movie is a psychological thriller starring The Weeknd (credited by his real name, Abel Tesfaye) as a loose interpretation of himself and chronicling an encounter with a strange fan that quickly devolves into chaos makes this one to watch in the early days of summer.

  • Cast: Camille Rutherford, Pablo Pauly, Charlie Anson

Romantics get a summer treat this month in Jane Austen Wrecked My Life. This indie centers on a bookseller who gets the chance to finally pursue her dream to become a writer by attending a Jane Austen residency. While there, she finds herself in her own romantic triangle.

  • Director: Christopher McQuarrie

Tom Cruise risks his life for our entertainment one more time, as the expected final Mission: Impossible movie arrives this month. While it has dropped the "Part 2," this is a continuation of the story from Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning that came out in 2023.

Bring Her Back

Sally Hawkins in Bring Her Back (Image credit: A24)
  • Release date: May 30
  • Cast: Billy Barratt, Sora Wong, Sally Hawkins
  • Directors: Danny and Michael Philippou

The directors of horror hit Talk to Me return with their sophomore effort, Bring Her Back, reuniting with A24. This movie focuses on a brother and sister who uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother, played by Sally Hawkins.

Karate Kid: Legends

Jackie Chan, Ben Wang and Ralph Macchio in Karate Kid: Legends (Image credit: Sony Pictures)
  • Release date: May 30
  • Cast: Ben Wang, Jackie Chan, Ralph Macchio, Ming-Na Wen, Joshua Jackson, Sadie Stanley
  • Director: Jonathan Entwistle

While Cobra Kai was a huge hit on Netflix, we haven't had a new Karate Kid movie since 2010's The Karate Kid when Jackie Chan debuted as Mr. Han, while we haven't seen Ralph Macchio in a Karate Kid movie since 1989. But they are now teaming up to teach a new student in Karate Kid: Legends. This feels like a movie that has the potential to bridge all the generations that have watched and loved these TV shows and movies.

The Phoenician Scheme

Benicio Del Toro and Mia Threapleton in The Phoenician Scheme (Image credit: Courtesy of TPS Productions/Focus Features)
  • Release date: May 30
  • Cast: Benicio Del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Michael Cera, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Mathieu Amalric, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Richard Ayodae, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis, Benedict Cumberbatch, Riz Ahemd
  • Director Wes Anderson

Wes Anderson returns with his latest movie, The Phoenician Scheme. Benicio del Toro and new collaborators Mia Threapleton and Michael Cera headline this movie that follows a wealthy European businessman and his daughter. But as always there are plenty of familiar Anderson collaborators set to appear. As a big fan of Anderson, this is one of my most anticipated movies of the summer.
