The 2025 Giro d'Italia will take on the next major challenge for the overall contenders on Tuesday, May 20 when the riders tackle the 28.6 kilometre individual time trial from Lucca to Pisa.
After a demanding stage on Sunday, traversing the white gravel roads of Tuscany, Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates XRG) became the unexpected race leader, having escaped with stage winner Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike).
Since Del Toro is in the maglia rosa, he will head down the starting ramp in Lucca last, at 16:40 local time. The expected finishing times will be in the 34-minute range.
First to start is the lanterne rouge of the race, Alexander Krieger (Tudor) but keep an eye on Visma-Lease a Bike's Edoardo Affini, the European time trial champion, who starts 35 minutes later.
Other contenders for the stage win include Van Aert, starting at 14:34, two minutes before Josh Tarling (Ineos Grenadiers).
The main block of GC contenders start at 16:04 with Thymen Arensman (Ineos).
As Philippa York noted in her rest day column, today will be a pivotal moment for Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and his GC campaign. It will be a chance for Roglič to make up time on Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) - who is still expected to be his team's main leader.
Roglič was caught up in a crash on the gravel and lost more than a minute, and trails Del Toro by 2:25 and Ayuso by 1:12.
On the 13.7km time trial in Tirana on stage 2, Roglič gained 16 seconds on Ayuso, finishing second by a single second behind Tarling, so look for the Slovenian to right the Red Bull ship on Tuesday.
