The PGA Tour was back in Texas this week for the annual CJ Cup Byron Nelson, offering a $9.9 million purse, with $1.782 million to the winner. The purse is a $400,000 bump from last year.
Scottie Scheffler tore up TPC Craig Ranch in Round 1, ringing up eight birdies and an eagle for a 61 and a two-shot lead and never looked back from there, winning at 31 under par by eight shots over Erik van Rooyen (and tying a PGA Tour record for low score in a 72-hole event). The win was his first of the year and 14th overall on the PGA Tour, not to mention a statement with the PGA Championship coming up in two weeks.
Jordan Spieth finished solo fourth, shooting a final-round 62 for his best round on Tour in four years—a confident sign as he tries to follow Rory McIlroy as a career Grand Slam champion at the PGA.
