Just as they did on Thursday for Day 1, the Jacksonville Jaguars opened up Day 2 of the 2021 NFL Draft with the top pick of the evening. After the selection of Clemson stars Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne on the offensive side, the Jags made their first selection on the defensive side by taking Georgia cornerback Tyson Campbell.
At 6-foot-1, 193 pounds, Campbell is coming from the best conference in the college football realm (the Southeastern Conference), which means he’s battle-tested. Last season he led the Bulldogs with five pass breakups throughout 10 starts. He also was able to register 29 tackles (2.5 were for loss) and registered a pick.
In terms of his total numbers in college, Campbell left Georgia with 86 total tackles, nine pass deflections, and a pick.
The Jags’ selection of Campbell is a puzzling one in the eyes of the fans when considering how active the Jags were at cornerback during free agency. They signed Shaq Griffin to be their CB1 and also re-signed both Tre Herndon and Sidney Jones IV. The team also spent a first-round pick on CJ Henderson last season, but in today’s pass-happy league, the Jags may be looking to add as many athletes as possible to the secondary.
Many have praised Campbell’s athletic ability and speed (was a high school sprint champion for the state of Florida), which Urban Meyer loves. However, his ball skills haven’t been consistent, but it’s clear the Jags’ staff believe they can coach him up.
