2021 NFL Draft: Giants currently hold third overall selection

The New York Giants defeated the Washington Football Team, 23-20, on Sunday to improve their 2020 record to 2-7. In the process, they dropped in the 2021 NFL draft order.

If the season ended today, the Giants would hold the third overall selection in next April’s NFL Draft behind the New York Jets (0-9) and Jacksonville Jacksonville (1-7).

Although some have predicted that as many as six quarterbacks could be taken in the first round of the draft next year, it is unlikely the Giants will select one.

In his mock draft on Tuesday, CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson mapped out the first five picks as such (he has the Giants picking fourth instead of third):

  1. Jets: Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson
  2. Jacksonville: Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State
  3. Dallas: Micah Parsons, LB, Penn State
  4. Giants: Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon
  5. Washington: Mac Jones, QB, Alabama

The selection of Sewell would most assuredly be met with little resistance by Giant fans but it could also be see as them ‘drafting over’ the two tackles they selected in last year’s draft — first rounder Andrew Thomas and third rounder Matt Peart.

“If you’re working from the premise that the Giants aren’t going to take a QB, this is best-case scenario,” wrote Wilson. “Land the top tackle in the country, pencil him in on the left side, and slide 2020 first-rounder Andrew Thomas over to right tackle.”

Given what we’ve seen, the Giants could be content with the better of the Thomas/Peart pairing at left tackle with the other moving to the right side. Bringing in Sewell makes one of the expendable, meaning they wasted either a first or third round pick in 2020.
