2021 NFL draft: 3 quarterbacks to watch on Day 2 for Washington

The Washington Football Team is still in need of a young quarterback for the future after day one of the 2021 NFL draft.

Head coach Ron Rivera met with the media after Washington selected Kentucky linebacker Jamin Davis in the first round and was asked if he felt tempted to move up for either Justin Fields or Mac Jones.

Rivera — and general manager Martin Mayhew — both said they were never serious about moving up in the first round. For Rivera, it’s all about building the entire roster before making a bold move for a quarterback.

Ron Rivera said Washington didn't trade up for a quarterback because the team felt it was more important to be patient and build a team for a quarterback first.

With day one in the books, there are several areas Washington could address on day two, such as offensive tackle and free safety. But don’t count Washington out on quarterbacks.

The franchise has done a lot of work on all of the quarterbacks in this draft, and there is interest in some of the passers outside of the first round.

Here are three quarterbacks to watch for Washington in the second and third rounds.

Davis Mills — Stanford

Stanford quarterback Davis Mills is a bit of a mystery. However, he has prototypical size at 6-foot-4, 217 pounds, and a strong arm. He was a five-star prospect in the 2017 recruiting class but played very little at Stanford.

However, NFL teams are intrigued with Mills. So someone will take a chance on him on day two. Chicago and New England, two teams that also did plenty of homework on Mills, each picked a first-round quarterback. That leaves Washington.

Will Washington spend a second-round pick on Mills with other talented players on the board who could help them immediately?

Kellen Mond — Texas A&M

I get the intrigue with Mond. He has good size, athleticism and is an effortless thrower. In addition, he is a four-year starter in the SEC. All of which was is impressive.

He will go on day two. Will it be to Washington?

Kyle Trask — Florida

Kyle Trask was outstanding for Florida in 2020. He finally moved into the starting lineup in 2019 and Florida’s offense gradually improved. He is a big, strong-armed passer who throws with timing and anticipation.

He’s not a strong athlete. Of all of the passers on day two, he is the one I like the best.
