2020 Tokyo Olympics: What is the time difference between Japan and the UK?

The 2020 Olympics are finally here, bringing together the crème de la crème of world sport, all in one place.

This year's summer games are being held in Tokyo, Japan, with the Paralympics set to follow later this summer.

Japan is, of course, a beautiful country, and it's sure to host a cracking tournament, but the time difference can cause some confusion for us Brits, given the distance between us and the Games this time around.

With that in mind, we thought we'd try to put that confusion to bed and explain it once and for all so you can watch all the events to your heart's content.

Time difference between UK and Japan

Japan runs on Japanese standard time, which is nine hours ahead of the universal standard, Greenwich mean time.

Here in the UK, we're currently on British summer time, which is one hour ahead of GMT.

This means Japan is currently eight hours ahead of the UK.

To put that in the context of the Olympics, it means an event that begins at 9am local time, such as the opening event, softball, will begin at 1am the same day from our perspective here in the UK.

Unfortunately, then, there will be some late nights - or early mornings - ahead for the sports fanatics among us.

All worth it in the name of great sporting action, of course, though I might skip that first softball session!
