The official posters for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games were unveiled at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in Koto Ward, Tokyo, on Monday, 200 days before the opening ceremony of the Games
"The Tokyo 2020 Official Art Posters Exhibition," which opened Tuesday and runs through Feb. 16., features 20 posters created by 18 artists and one art collective, comprising creative talent from Japan and abroad.
The exhibition was organized by the Tokyo metropolitan government and the Games' organizing committee among others.
Chosen by the exhibition's selection committee, the participating artists created 12 posters for the Olympic Games and eight for the Paralympic Games.
The five rings of the Olympic logo are depicted on trajectories in the sky in the poster by graphic designer Taku Satoh, while photographer Mika Ninagawa's design includes a photo of an airborne Paralympian stretching for a ball. Two posters by artist Asao Tokoro, the creator of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic logos, feature reinterpreted designs of the iconic indigo symbols.
Manga artist Naoki Urasawa included a manga-style comic strip on his poster. "I added the word 'Tsuzuku' [to be continued] at the bottom because I wanted to add a sense of the anticipation of what's to come ... I hope it will resonate with the athletes," Usasawa said.
