2020 Senior Bowl: Winners, losers from Day 2 practices

Plenty of performances stood out on Day 2 of the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.

Who impressed? Who disappointed?

Here are my picks for the the biggest winners and losers from Wednesday’s on-field action:

Winner – Jordan Love | QB | Utah State

It was Justin Herbert that had the best day out of all quarterbacks on Day 1, but Love had the slight leg up today. Herbert still had a great day, but Love was fantastic. He made a lot of magnificent passes, showing his super quick, a live arm and beautiful ball placement throughout the entire duration of the practice. He had the type of the day that many believe he is the type of player that could sneak into the top-10.

Loser – Nick Harris | OC | Washington

Harris entered the week as one of the top-rated centers, but he hasn’t been able to live up to the expectations. Even though he’s more dominant as a run-blocker, he still needs to show that he can hold up in pass protection, which he wasn’t able to do during the one-on-one periods. He was caught leaning far too often, which gave defenders the opportunity to knock him off balance and he was overwhelmed at the point of attack.

Winner – North Team EDGE

Michigan’s Josh Uche, Utah’s Bradlee Anae, Michigan State’s Kenny Willekes and North Carolina Jason Strowbridge all had themselves a field day. Uche was winning with a speed and bend. Anae showed a blend of an elite first step and converting speed to power. Willekes showcased a few inside moves along with a high energy that didn’t go unnoticed. Strowbridge shined both inside and outside, displaying a powerful upper body and active hands.

Loser – Evan Weaver | LB | California

There’s one thing that stands out to Weaver’s game, and that’s filling in the gap where he makes thumping stops. He did have a play where he did so, which raised some eyebrows. But one aspect to Weaver’s game that scouts wanted to see was how he would hold up in coverage. Today, he failed to do so. During the one-on-ones, Weaver was beat a few times, showing the lack of fluid movements to hold up and redirect with running backs.

Winner – Troy Pride, Jr. | CB | Notre Dame

Pride wasn’t mentioned in yesterday’s winners and losers, but he did put together a solid performance. He didn’t disappoint again, either. Pride showed great speed and quickness, as well as good timing to corral at the catch point. He had an interception during the one-on-ones against wide receiver Quartney Davis, and later broke up a pass against USC’s Michael Pittman.

Loser – Antonio Gandy-Golden | WR | Liberty

Uneven is the best way to describe Gandy-Golden’s day. He had some solid routes that had him open in the short, intermediate and deep parts of the field, but he was unable to reel in a good chunk of the lay-up passes that were thrown to him.

Winner – Denzel Mims | WR | Baylor

The most efficient receiver today was Mims. He did an excellent job of separating in a variety of ways, whether that was with release moves at the line of scrimmage or exploding vertically, Mims was open and catching everything that he was being thrown. He even had a catch over Troy Pride, Jr., who was another winner.

Winner | Collin Johnson | WR | Texas

Another wideout that had themselves a day was Johnson. Johnson, the 6-foot-5 and 221 pound receiver, showed off with vertical speed and foot quickness that defenders had to respect. He was strong in traffic and he surprised many with his route running and separation ability.

Winner | Stephen Sullivan | TE | LSU

Sullivan has flown under the radar because he didn’t have a very productive career at LSU that was notable. But he let everyone know who was today. The 6-foot-5 and 242 pound tight end was all over the field, gliding away from linebackers in coverage and reeling in every pass that was thrown his way with his long arms. Sullivan was a force as a blocker, controlling the point of attack with forceful hands, including one play during a blitz pick-up drill where he absolutely stoned Florida’s Jonathan Greenard.
