The marathon route for the Paralympics has been announced by the 2020 Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The route will follow the same course as that for the Olympic Games, starting and finishing at the New National Stadium in Shinjuku Ward to cover a total of 42.195 kilometers, the organizing committee said Monday.

It will pass such Tokyo landmarks as the Kaminarimon gate of Sensoji temple in Taito Ward, the Ginza area, Tokyo Tower in Minato Ward and the Imperial Palace in Chiyoda Ward.

There are a combined five marathon events for men and women, categorized according to such factors as the use of a wheelchair and visual impairment.

The first of the events will start from 7 a.m. on Sept. 6, the final day of the Paralympics.

"The start and the goal are the same as for the Olympics, so the athletes will be fired up," wheelchair marathoner Hiroki Nishida said at a press conference in Tokyo on Monday.
