2020 panto cancelled at Aberdare Coliseum and Treorchy's Park and Dare as theatres close until 2021

The Christmas panto at Rhondda Cynon Taf's theatres has been cancelled for 2020.

It's one of the most popular annual events of the festive season, but has been pushed back a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

RCT Theatres were due to stage Dick Whittington at both the Coliseum Theatre, Aberdare, and the Park & Dare Theatre, Treorchy, but it has now been rescheduled to Christmas 2021.

The authority said that social distancing measures, put in place to keep staff, cast and audiences safe, mean that staging the panto would be "impossible".

Customers who had already booked tickets will be contacted over the coming weeks to arrange either transferring their tickets to a performance next year or taking a full refund.

It's not only the Christmas event that has been cancelled or postponed, all the autumn events planned for the Coliseum Theatre and the Park & Dare Theatre have been pushed back.

Councillor Rhys Lewis, Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities, Well-being and Cultural Services, said: “It is with great regret and sadness that we have had to make this decision, however the safety of our customers, staff and performers is of the highest priority.

“Under current guidance including on mass gatherings and social distancing, it will not be possible to present the autumn season as planned. We thank all of our customers and partners for their understanding at this time and assure all that we will be re-opening both our theatres as soon as it is safe to do so.”

The Council’s Cultural Service is hoping to introduce alternative ways to entertain people,  including during the festive period, encouraging them to "get creative and support their physical and mental wellbeing".
