The first permanent official shop selling authorized goods of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics opened in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo, on Monday.

While there have been pop-ups, the Shinjuku store opened by the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games is the first long-term retail outlet.

The store is located inside the building of home appliance retailer Bic Camera Inc.'s store near JR Shinjuku Station's west exit.

About 700 items, including T-shirts with 2020 Games emblems and stuffed mascot toys, are on sale.

Miraitowa and Someity, the Games' official mascots whose names were announced Sunday, appeared at the opening event on Monday.

Softball pitcher Yukiko Ueno, who led the Japanese team to gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, cut the ribbon at the ceremony. "I hope as many people as possible feel close to the Games and support [the events and athletes]," Ueno said.
