The Chicago Bears didn’t have a first-round selection for the second straight year — a necessary expense for a generational talent in Khalil Mack — and general manager Ryan Pace didn’t trade back into the first round, which is certainly a win. But they come into Day 2 armed with a pair of second-rounders that can add some solid talent to the roster.
Last week, it was reported by Brad Biggs that Pace would look to try and trade one or both of the Bears’ second-round selections. From a logical standpoint, it makes sense. Chicago has just seven draft picks — and only two in the first four rounds. In trading one or both second-rounders, Pace could accrue additional draft capital — perhaps a third or fourth-round pick — and get more bang for his buck in a talented draft class.
But with so much first-round talent still on the board heading into Round 2, should the Bears trade down — with one or both picks — or stay put at No. 43 and No. 50?
There were several first-round prospects that fell to Day 2, among them safety Xavier McKinney, offensive guard Robert Hunt, offensive tackle Ezra Cleveland, cornerback Trevon Diggs, wide receiver Tee Higgins and running back D’Andre Swift.
Pace could address some important needs with some high-level prospects in the second round, including safety, cornerback, offensive line, receiver and running back.
But with a deep draft class, the Bears could still find some great talent if they were to trade down in the second round — and they also grab an additional pick or two, depending on whether they trade one or both second-rounders.
