2020 NFL Draft Profile: Utah State TE Caleb Repp

2020 NFL Draft Profile: Utah State TE Caleb Repp

After one standout year at USU, is the Aggies tight end this year’s best Mountain West prospect at the position?

Lots of projection, but lots to like.

There’s no other Mountain West prospect in this year’s NFL Draft class quite like Caleb Repp. After just one season as a full-time tight end in Logan, it might be safe to say there’s a lot of raw promise that NFL teams will have to sort through to see whether or not it’s worth giving him a shot.

Height – 6′ 5″

Weight – 227 pounds

40-Yard Dash – 4.78 seconds

Strengths

If you had to boil Repp’s upside down to one word, it would probably be “rangy”. Repp’s film demonstrates a fairly substantial catch radius, the athleticism to bring down tough balls and, as NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein writes, the “body positioning to improve contested catch wins”.

Weakness

Will Repp actually be a tight end at the pro level? There are concerns that he is too light to handle the traditional role and Zierlein points to thin hips as a culprit which could prevent him from doing much to remedy that. He did receive playing time as an outside receiver at Utah State, but he also doesn’t have the speed of similarly sized pass-catching prospects like Liberty’s Antonio Gandy-Golden or Oregon’s Juwan Johnson.

The fact that he had just one season of full-time production on the collegiate level may leave some coaching staffs cold, too, because the possible “tweener” label may come with more risk than reward.

Draft Prediction

Chances are that Repp ends up in a training camp somewhere, but it seems most likely that he gets there via free agency. For a projectable tight end, however, that wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.
