2020 gear guide: New golf balls

For whatever your game needs, equipment designers have been busy tweaking existing lines for better performance and often introducing entirely new clubs.

Golf balls have been tweaked to help players gain yards while still providing that much needed zip when they land on the greens. Check out some of the balls introduced for this season.

Bridgestone Tour B X 2020

Bridgestone Tour B

Price: $44.99 per dozen

The key technology in the second generation of Tour B balls is a new type of urethane used in the cover. Off the tee, the urethane rebounds more quickly than other urethanes Bridgestone has used to help golfers generate more ball speed and distance. However, on pitches and chip shots, it absorbs shock and helps the ball stay in contact with the face longer.

Callaway Chrome Soft and Chrome Soft X 2020 balls

Callaway Chrome Soft, Chrome Soft X

Price: $47.99 per dozen

The updated Chrome Soft is a four-piece, dual-core ball with a urethane cover, and this edition’s inner core is 34 percent larger for more speed and a higher launch angle. It is encased by an outer core infused with graphene to enhance durability and a stiff mantle layer that helps provide more spin on approaches and wedge shots.

Srixon Q-Star balls

Srixon Q-Star

Price: $32.99 per dozen

These balls are soft in the center and gradually grow firmer toward the outer areas. While some balls have one or two cores, Srixon said the FastLayer core is like having thousands of layers, giving golfers a softer feel at impact with better energy transfer for more distance.

TaylorMade TP5 Pix 2020

TaylorMade TP5, TP5X Pix

Price: $44.99 per dozen

The new Pix has updated graphics that not only make it easier to spot in flight but also help golfers on the green. The original Pix ball lacked an uninterrupted place to put an alignment line, but by adjusting the logo and going with triangular shapes instead of Xs, TaylorMade has made it simple for golfers to add a line.

Titleist AVX (2020)

Titleist AVX (2020)

Price: $47.99 per dozen

For golfers who want a softer feel, less full-swing spin and a lower flight, Titleist offers the updated AVX for 2020. The larger core should help it develop more speed off the tee, and the walls of the 352 dimples in the cast urethane cover have been tweaked to give the AVX more lift. The new cover is also 17 percent thinner, so the grooves in wedges and short irons can grab the ball more effectively.

Wilson Staff DUO+ golf balls

Wilson Staff DUO Soft+

Price: $19.99 per dozen

Wilson’s new Staff Duo+ golf balls have a fresh core and a low compression that the company says result in more speed than previous models. Wilson also said the Staff DUO Soft+ is the lowest-spinning two-piece ball on the market. That could make it ideally suited for golfers who battle a slice or a hook because lower overall spin should translate to decreased sidespin.
