2019 Shanghai motor show report

Amid a slew of China-only models, EVs and stretched cars, some concepts are being previewed by major global players.

Audi AI:ME
Audi is showing its vision of urban mobility with this latest concept. The AI:ME has 170hp of electric performance and 4.3m-long body. It’s also capable of Level 4 autonomous driving, that is, the ability to drive on its own in defined traffic area. The last radical city car Audi built was the A2 two decades back.

Volkswagen ID Roomzz
A seventh member in VW’s ID family of all-electric concepts has been unleashed. This time, it’s a three-row SUV aimed at the Tesla Model X. Although not a single ID has reached showrooms yet, the Roomzz is confirmed for sale two years from now initially in China, the world’s most important EV market.

Infiniti Qs
Nissan’s luxurious nameplate is exploring the possibility of a dedicated EV housed around a sedan package. The Qs has a high driving position, sporty exterior profile and AWD electric performance that could rival the Audi e-tron GT. Last January in Detroit, Nissan showed its version called IMs.

Toyota Rhombus
This is probably the most outlandish concept shown in Shanghai. The Rhombus is an all-electric city runabout with the face of the Predator, More interesting is the four-seat layout: a central driver’s chair and another three for passengers placed in a U-shape.

Mercedes-Benz Concept GLB
The Concept GLB is virtually the actual car for the showroom by the year’s end. The three-row SUV is built around the mechanicals of Mercedes-Benz’s family of small cars. A new eight-speed dual-clutch automatic feature. Expect the real GLB to cost around 2.5 to three million baht in Thailand.
