The 2019 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs are finally here, beginning tonight with the opening five matchups of the first round. All 16 teams in the field are hoping to raise Lord Stanley’s Cup at the end of the postseason, capping off a long and arduous journey with the prestigious trophy. While every club currently has the same unblemished playoff record, it’s readily apparent that some are much more likely than others to be named champions this year.
The Tampa Bay Lightning are the clear-cut favorites to win the 2019 NHL Stanley Cup Finals, opening as a massive, 2-1 favorite. That should come as no surprise after Tampa’s historic 2018-19 campaign in which it amassed 128 points—the fourth most of all time—and won 62 overall and 30 road games, feats only one other team has ever accomplished. The Lightning had locked up a franchise first President’s Trophy back in late March and have been able to focus on the playoffs for quite some time, which means anything less than a championship would be a disappointment for this group. The Calgary Flames have the second-best odds of capturing a title at 8-1, while the Boston Bruins (9-1), Nashville Predators (12-1) and the defending champion Washington Capitals (12-1) round out the top five.
