2019 NFL supplemental draft time, rules, and Jets’ needs

There will be one more draft before the start of training camp, the NFL supplemental draft.

The supplemental draft is meant for prospects who are facing an eligibility issue at their respected school. In order for someone to be eligible for the draft, they must be three years removed from when they graduated high school.

All 32 teams can participate in the draft if they wish and they are split into three categories: teams with six or fewer wins, the rest of the non-playoff teams and playoff teams. Then, teams bid on a round they’d like to select a player. The team with the highest bid receives that player, but loses a pick in April’s draft the following season. Any player who does not receive a bid can become an unrestricted free agent and may sign with any team.

Here’s a quick primer on the draft for Jets fans:

When: July 10 at 1 p.m. ET

Prospects:

  • Jalen Thompson, S, Washington State
  • Marcus Simms, WR, West Virginia
  • Shyheim Cullen, LB, Syracuse
  • Bryant Perry, DB, St. Francis
  • Devonaire Clarington, TE, Northland Community College

Jets’ Needs: With the Jets only winning four games last season, they are in a really good spot to take a player if they wish too. Gang Green was already on hand for the workout of wide receiver Marcus Simms. The Jets also have a need at cornerback, so defensive back Bryant Perry could be in the cards as well.
