2019 NFL Scouting Combine: Safety winners, losers from Monday

The 2019 NFL Scouting Combine is officially in the books. The event concluded with the safeties on Monday.

Here are our winners and losers from the group.

WINNERS

Juan Thornhill | Virginia

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

As we rolled into the 40-yard dashes, the former Virginia product continued to turn heads with an official time of 4.43 seconds. During the drills he showed great footwork.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise if Thornhill finds himself selected by the end of the end of the third round.

Chauncey Gardner-Johnson | Florida

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

The versatile defensive back amassed a 4.49 second 40-yard dash, which is quite impressive for his size. The former Florida product showed the ability to flip his hips smoothly in the drills, which is why he will excel at the variety of roles at the next level.

Gardner-Johnson likely drew the attention of teams selecting early on in Day 2.

Darnell Savage, Jr. | Maryland

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Savage ran a 4.36 40, which was third best among all defensive backs and also put up a 39.5-inch vertical and 10-foot-6 broad jump.

Despite the smaller stature at 5-foot-10 and 198 pounds, Savage plays bigger than his measurements suggest. The former Maryland product will draw attention from teams to play slot cornerback at the next level.

LOSERS

Mike Bell | Fresno State

Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

Bell posted a slow 4.83 40-yard dash, and followed that up with average on-field drills.

Unless Bell blows up his Pro Day, we can expect a rather limited schemed player, who will likely go somewhere late on Day 3.

Thornhill’s day came as a bit of surprise, as many saw a player that wasn’t overly athletic. But Thornhill blew every number out of the water, starting with his 44-inch vertical jump. He then followed that up with an 11-foot-9 broad jump. One of the fastest risers in this safety class, Gardner-Johnson further helped his stock with an impressive day coming in at 210 pounds. Named the top defensive back at the Senior Bowl, Savage entered the combine looking to carry the success he was having. Bell first caught my attention at the 2018 Las Vegas Bowl against Arizona State. He displayed good instincts, ball skills, and the ability to play the run very well. It didn’t look like the athleticism was there, but his combine confirmed that.
