2019 NFL mock draft: Colts trade back, select S Johnathan Abram

There are likely going to be several options for the Indianapolis Colts when they are on the clock in the 2019 NFL Draft. That includes the possibility of trading back if general manager Chris Ballard is so inclined.

Ballard has stated many times he has no issue with trading back in order to acquire more selections. In USA TODAY’s latest mock draft, the Colts trade back a few spots with the Kansas City Chiefs to the No. 29 overall pick.

They wound up selecting Mississippi State safety Johnathan Abram with the pick. It wasn’t mentioned what they received in return for the trade, but adding one of their second or third round picks could happen.

29. Colts (from Chiefs) — Johnathan Abram, S, Mississippi State: A heat-seeking enforcer, he’d meld beautifully with center fielder Malik Hooker on Indy’s back line.

This would be an interesting development because the Chiefs wound up selecting Florida State defensive end Brian Burns with the Colts’ pick. Given how much attention the Colts have paid Burns during the pre-draft process, it is unlikely they would trade back if he is on the board.

Abram, though, is another prospect the Colts appear to be high on. He’s a solid fit for the scheme as a tone setter and while his ball skills will need improvement, he’s an enforcer that can work close the line of scrimmage.

The Colts do have a need to add to the safety position, and Abram would be a nice addition given his prowess near the line of scrimmage. Passing on a pass rusher like Burns, however, is hard to see.
