2019 NFL mock draft: Colts select CB Greedy Williams

The projections for the Indianapolis Colts and their selection in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft are all over the place, which is to be expected given where they are selecting from.

With several needs to address, especially on the defensive side of the ball, the Colts have various ways they can go about making their first-round selection. They can look to add an edge rusher, interior defensive lineman or safety to name a few.

In Peter King’s mock draft for Football Morning in America, the Colts went a different route and selected LSU cornerback Greedy Williams with the No. 26 overall pick.

26. Indianapolis: Greedy Williams, CB, LSU

He’s 6-2 and runs a 4.37 time in the 40-yard dash. What’s not to like? Tackling, perhaps. But the Colts need two things badly: an edge-rusher and a shutdown cornerback. Williams is better at corner than the remaining edge guys are at sacking the quarterback. However, keep one thing in mind with Colts GM Chris Ballard: He’s not going to change his board to fit his needs. If there’s a significantly higher-rated player here, Ballard will take him.

It isn’t clear where Williams is on the Colts’ board. He is considered to be among the top prospects at the cornerback position for this year’s class, but there are some issues that might make the Colts not want to use a first-round selection on him.

First and foremost, his tackling is a trait that will certainly concern the Colts. They’ve made it clear that cornerbacks working in Matt Eberflus’ system need to be able to make plays on ball carriers. This is while Pierre Desir and Kenny Moore are able to thrive in the zone-heavy defense.

Another reason Williams might not be high on the board is due to the way the Colts use the position. In their heavy Cover-2 defense, a shutdown corner isn’t a necessity. Sure, it’s nice to have, but having players follow their assignments will get the job done.

Who the Colts will draft with their first pick is a mystery, but the upside of a player like Williams always makes him a potential option at No. 26.
