The 2019 NFL Scouting Combine is officially upon us, bringing about yet another important mile marker on the seemingly endless journey that is the annual predraft process.
As this year’s top prospects prepare to show off their skills and impress league decision-makers in Indy, here’s an updated look at how the first four rounds of the 2019 NFL draft could shake out, complete with plenty of big trades at the top:
1. Arizona Cardinals | Quinnen Williams | DL | Alabama
If the Cardinals aren’t able to sell this pick for a king’s ransom, they’ll be picking between two elite defenders. So, what breaks the tie? How about the fact that Arizona already has one of the league’s best edge rushers in Chandler Jones, who would benefit even further from a dominant interior presence like Williams.
2. San Francisco 49ers | Nick Bosa | EDGE | Ohio State
Any scenario that leaves Bosa on the board for the 49ers would be a dream scenario for general manager John Lynch and his crew. Getting the top overall prospect in the draft any later than the No. 1 overall pick is a steal, and it just happens to fill San Francisco’s biggest need.
3. New York Jets | Josh Allen | EDGE | Kentucky
The Jets either need to get someone to get after the quarterback with this pick, or someone to protect their own. In this scenario, the better value is on defense, where new coach Adam Gase lands a versatile, productive edge defender in Allen.
4. Jacksonville Jaguars (from OAK)* | Dwayne Haskins | QB | Ohio State
The Blake Bortles experiment is over, and the Jags desperately need to make a bold move to secure a new franchise quarterback. They’re likely to find a willing trade partner in the Raiders, who keep adding premium picks by getting at least a second-round pick and a third-round pick from Jacksonville in this deal.
5. Denver Broncos (from TB)* | Drew Lock | QB | Missouri
Sorry, but I’m not buying the addition of a 34-year-old Joe Flacco as evidence the Broncos won’t be targeting a quarterback of the future early in this draft. Lock has all the physical tools to be a franchise passer, and John Elway knows he needs a long-term solution at the game’s most important position. In return for his picks in the second and third rounds this year, and likely another Day 2 pick next year, Elway gets his man.
6. New York Giants | Jonah Williams | OT | Alabama
Two quarterbacks are off the board already, and I don’t see an old-school general manager like Dave Gettleman spending a top-10 pick on a dual-threat quarterback like Kyler Murray to groom behind veteran Eli Manning. Instead, Gettleman will build through the trenches, giving Manning some improved protection with the experienced and versatile Williams.
7. Oakland Raiders (from JAX)* | Devin White | LB | LSU
After moving back a few spots and adding even more picks, Mike Mayock and Jon Gruden still land a player that could have gotten strong consideration at their original slot. White is exactly the kind of difference-maker the Raiders desperately need at the heart of their defense.
8. Detroit Lions | Greedy Williams | CB | LSU
There are needs at every level for this defense, but finding a stud corner to line up opposite Darius Slay should be high on the list. While Williams is still learning how to maximize his physical skills, he has the height, length and athleticism to be a star at the next level.
9. Buffalo Bills | D.K. Metcalf | WR | Ole Miss
This should be a prime trade-up spot for a quarterback if both Murray and Duke’s Daniel Jones are still on the clock. That said, if the Bills don’t get the right offer, they’d likely be more than happy to stay put and give Josh Allen this year’s top pass-catcher. Metcalf’s rare combination of size and athleticism would immediately make him the best receiver on the roster.
10. Miami Dolphins (from DEN via TB)* | Kyler Murray | QB | Oklahoma
I have a gut feeling the Dolphins are the best fit for Murray, but I think they’ll have to move up from No. 13 if they want him. In this scenario, the Bucs trade back yet again, adding another third-round pick for their troubles, while Miami gets their dynamic franchise quarterback to replace Ryan Tannehill.

11. Cincinnati Bengals | T.J Hockenson | TE | Iowa
If the Bengals miss out on this year’s top quarterbacks and Devin White, they’ll be faced with a decision: Take the next-best passer, or help the one they already have by giving him another dynamic weapon. If new coach Zac Taylor is going to get the best out of Andy Dalton, having a complete tight end like Hockenson would be a huge help.
12. Green Bay Packers | Brian Burns | EDGE | Florida State
I’d expect the Packers to be prime trade-back candidates, but with such a huge need for a dynamic edge rusher, they might not be able to pass up a talent like Burns. He’s still growing into his tall frame, but Burns is a refined technician with rare explosiveness and bend.
13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (from MIA)* | Jawaan Taylor | OT | Florida
While passing up Ed Oliver would be difficult, the Bucs have bigger problems than defensive line depth, and a stellar prospect starting them in the face here. Taylor would be an instant replacement for Demar Dotson at right tackle, and could eventually become the starter on the left side if Donovan Smith doesn’t get locked up long-term.
14. Atlanta Falcons | Ed Oliver | DL | Houston
The Dirty Birds would be crossing their fingers in this scenario, hoping Oliver slips past their NFC South rivals and into their waiting arms. While some might fear Oliver as a ‘tweener prospect, his rare athleticism and versatility will be a dangerous weapon in the right scheme.
15. Washington Redskins | Daniel Jones | QB | Duke
It’s hard to imagine Alex Smith being ready to play at any point in 2019, and there’s nothing currently on the roster that screams starting-caliber NFL quarterback. If they can manage to land a raw but promising passer like Jones without sacrificing additional picks to trade up for him, it would be a huge win.
16. Carolina Panthers | Clelin Ferrell | EDGE | Clemson
Julius Peppers was a rare talent, and while the Panthers won’t find that kind of player at No. 16 in this draft, they should still target a talented edge rusher to fill the void left behind by the future Hall of Famer. Ferrell is a well-rounded prospect who can start immediately.
17. Cleveland Browns | Byron Murphy | CB | Washington
There are a few different directions the Browns could go here, but finding a young corner to pair with rookie Pro Bowler Denzel Ward should be one of their top priorities. While Murphy doesn’t have the height or length of other top corners in this class, his combination of ball skills and instincts will make him an instant success at the next level.
18. Minnesota Vikings | Cody Ford | OT | Oklahoma
This team has some dangerous offensive weapons and a capable quarterback, but the protection has to improve across the board. Ford has the size, athleticism and physicality to be an instant upgrade at either tackle spot, allowing the Vikings to check at least one offensive line position off their offseason list.
19. Tennessee Titans | Christian Wilkins | DL | Clemson
urrell Casey is still one of the NFL’s better interior defenders, but he needs some young talent to help him out. Wilkins surprised many by returning for his senior season, but he put together his best campaign yet, and solidified himself as a first-round lock in this class.
20. Pittsburgh Steelers | Montez Sweat | EDGE | Mississippi State
Corner is the bigger need, but the Steelers have been reaching to fill needs in the first round way too often in recent years. The better move here is to add a massive, physical pass rusher like Sweat, who followed up a solid career against SEC competition with a strong outing at the Senior Bowl.

21. Indianapolis Colts (from SEA)* | Rashan Gary | DL | Michigan
This defense needs reinforcements at every level, and even in a deep class of interior defensive linemen, Gary is a rare talent worth trading up for. Injuries and playing out of position held him back in Ann Arbor, but if the Colts slid him inside where he belongs, he could immediately be the dominant force they need up front.
22. Baltimore Ravens | Kelvin Harmon | WR | North Carolina State
The Lamar Jackson era has officially begun in Baltimore, and the Ravens need to build a better supporting cast around their new franchise quarterback. First on the list? Finding him a true No. 1 receiver, with the big frame and complete skill set Harmon brings to the table.
23. Houston Texans | Dalton Risner | OT | Kansas State
Deshaun Watson is one of the league’s best young quarterbacks, but the Texans desperately need to improve his protection. This year’s deep tackle class should give Houston plenty of solid options at this pick, and in this scenario, the versatile and experienced Risner is the best value.
24. Oakland Raiders (from CHI) | Jachai Polite | EDGE | Florida
The Raiders have three first-round picks to play with, and one of them must be used on a pass-rushing prospect who can help replace what they lost in Khalil Mack. It’s a lofty ceiling, but Polite has the explosiveness and knack for forcing fumbles to be a difference-maker sooner than later.
25. Philadelphia Eagles | Deandre Baker | CB | Georgia
While a dynamic running back like Josh Jacobs would be tempting here, the Eagles have far more pressing needs on both sides of the ball, and this year’s running back class is extremely deep. Baker is a battle-tested ball-hawk who would instantly bolster depth where it’s desperately needed.
26. Seattle Seahawks (from IND)* | Deionte Thompson | S | Alabama
After moving back and adding a third-round selection to help ease the loss of their original second-round pick, the Seahawks still land a dynamic playmaker to replace Earl Thomas. Thompson still needs some refinement, but all the physical tools are there.
27. Oakland Raiders (from DAL) | N’Keal Harry | WR | Arizona State
Jon Gruden traded away Amari Cooper for this pick, so spending it on his replacement would make plenty of sense. The Raiders don’t have a receiver currently on the roster who can boast Harry’s big frame, complete skill set and impressive after-the-catch ability.
28. Los Angeles Chargers | Greg Little | OT | Ole Miss
Philip Rivers can’t have too many seasons left, and the Bolts need to do everything they can to maximize what time he can still give them. That starts with improving the tackle situation, and Little has all the tools to quickly develop into a quality starter.
29. Kansas City Chiefs | Trayvon Mullen | CB | Clemson
Pass defense held this team back in a big way last year, and even with the emergence of undrafted free agent (and trade acquisition) Charvarius Ward, the Chiefs should still be looking for a starting-caliber corner here. Mullen has the size, length and playmaking ability the team covets at the position.
30. Green Bay Packers (from NO) | Noah Fant | TE | Iowa
After filling one of their biggest needs on defense earlier in the first round, the Packers use their additional selection to get Aaron Rodgers a dynamic weapon. Fant has the size and athleticism to create serious matchup problems for opposing defenses, making him the perfect successor to Jimmy Graham.
31. New York Giants (from LAR)* | Mack Wilson | LB | Alabama
After helping out Eli Manning with their top-10 pick, the Giants trade a Day 2 pick in next year’s draft (and a Day 3 pick in this year’s) to move back into the first round for a defensive playmaker. Wilson is still a bit raw, but there’s no denying his combination of athleticism and physicality, which makes him a strong value pick here.
32. New England Patriots | Nasir Adderley | S | Delaware
Devin McCourty and Patrick Chung are both 31 years old, so finding a young safety to groom behind them should be a priority for the defending champs in this draft. Adderley is still fairly raw, but his physical tools and versatility would make him a wise investment at the end of the first round.
