2019 NFL Free Agency: Preston Smith could present option at edge rusher

The Tennessee Titans head into the 2019 offseason with a need for more depth at a number of positions, including edge rusher.

There are a number of ways general manager Jon Robinson and the team could go about the between the 2019 NFL Draft and free agency. If they’re looking for a plug-and-play type, the Washington Redskins’ Preston Smith presents an option.

Acquiring Smith would instantly give the Titans a quality starter that could complement rising talent Harold Landry.

Smith has been quietly productive on his past four seasons with the Redskins, racking up a total of 24.5 sacks. According to Pro Football Focus, Smith finished the 2018 season tied 13th among edge rushers with 38 quarterback hits.

Smith also offers more athleticism and size than other potential top options like Trey Flowers and Za’Darius Smith.

Music City Miracles’ Mike Herndon pinned Smith as one of Tennessee’s most favorable potential signings back in February.

“His length and power bring an element that is currently missing in the Titans front seven,” he wrote. “He’s been a durable and mostly very productive player during his first four seasons, but has stayed under the radar enough that he might not command the top dollar that his skill set suggests he should.”

So what will it cost Robinson and Co. to bring Smith over to Nashville?

Spotrac has Smith at an average annual salary projection of $11.2M, and there’s also the expectation he could go for even higher than that.
