2019 NFL Draft: Will the Titans choose a defensive player in the first round?

There’s been plenty of talk this offseason as the 2019 NFL Draft approaches about the Tennessee Titans selecting a player on offense in the first round.

From tight end to offensive lineman to wide receiver — the Titans have been mocked several players to improve the passing game or protect quarterback Marcus Mariota with their first selection.

But given general manager Jon Robinson’s free agency moves, it’s becoming more plausible to believe the Titans will go defense with the No. 19 overall pick.

Veteran sports journalist John Clayton noted this in a recent article with Titans Online.

“Jon Robinson is smart, and he knows how to play the draft. He knows the strengths of the draft. So what’s he done this offseason? He gets a guard, and he gets a wide receiver,” he said.

There seems to be a good concentration on offense, and so I would imagine they would lean toward defense. Initially I was thinking they’d lean toward wide receiver, but that’s now not necessarily in the mix. So I think it’s going to probably be somebody on the defensive line, and maybe somebody to be a pass rusher. But I think it’s going to be more defense that anything else.”

It makes sense.

With the addition of slot receiver Adam Humphries, who is coming off a career year, the Titans aren’t pressed to pick up a top talent at wideout in the first round.

It’s the same concept with offensive lineman Rodger Scaffold, who should provide a major upgrade within a struggling Titans O-line.

Given how unpredictable Robinson has been in the past, guesswork is the best analysts can do before the Titans take to the board on April 25.
