2019 NFL Draft: UCLA tight end Caleb Wilson becomes Mr. Irrelevant

The final pick of the NFL Draft is Mr. Irrelevant. He is feted in Newport Beach, Ca. The 2019 Mr. Irrelevant doesn’t have to go far to attend.

UCLA tight end Caleb Wilson was chosen by the Arizona Cardinals, the last pick in the seventh round Saturday, 254th overall. Interestingly, the Cardinals began the draft, grabbing Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray.

So, there is the chance the first pick and the last pick of 2019 could become an NFL combination.

What has happened is Wilson has caught passes from the Cardinals’ No. 1 pick in 2018. As a Bruin, Wilson was a favorite target of Josh Rosen, the QB who was dispatched from Arizona to Miami on Friday.

Overall at UCLA, the 6-foot-4, 235-pound Wilson caught 114 passes for 1,675 yards and five touchdowns. Entering the 2018 season, a lot of scouts believed he was one of the top tight ends in the country.

And, then there is the back story that makes Wilson unique. He’s one of the few people who has been on both sides of the USC-UCLA football rivalry. Wilson attended USC as a preferred walk-on before transferring to UCLA.

His dad, Chris was a two-time All-American at Oklahoma. He almost was Mr. Irrelevant himself, going to the Houston Oilers as pick No. 332 of 336 in the 1992 NFL Draft, which went 12 rounds.

Have to wonder how excited a person who went to school in Westwood is about a trip to Newport Beach, which is about an hour from UCLA.
