2019 NFL draft: Steelers positional rankings at top spots of need

Matt Bush-USA TODAY Sports

The 2019 NFL draft is just a few days away. Everyone has spent the last several months getting up to speed on the prospects. Here is our top five positional rankings for the Pittsburgh Steelers top five positions of need. Five by five of the best guys destined to be Steelers.

Wide receiver

The Steelers signed Donte Moncrief but there is still work to be done at the position. For me, the complete game of A.J. Brown puts him ahead of the other great wide receivers in this group.

1-A.J. Brown, Ole Miss

2-Hakeem Butler, Iowa State

3-N’Keal Harry, Arizona State

4-D.K. Metcalf, Ole Miss

5-Marquise Brown, Oklahoma

Edge rusher

Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports

Realistically, most of these guys will be off the board before the Steelers pick in the first round. But if a guy like Montez Sweat happens to slip a little, it’s an easy choice to pick him.

1-Josh Allen, Kentucky

2-Nick Bosa, Ohio State

3-Brian Burns, Florida State

4-Motez Sweat, Mississippi State

5-Clelin Ferrell, Clemson

Cornerback

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

Keep an eye on these names because there’s a good chance one of them will be a Steeler by the weekend. Most agree former LSU Greedy Williams is the best coverage player but struggles with tackling but every guy on this list has some flaws. It’ll be up to the Steelers to find the guy who fits the system the best.

1-Greedy Williams, LSU

2-Rock Ya-Sin, Temple

3-Byron Murphy, Washington

4-Deandre Baker, Georgia

5-Justin Layne, Michigan State

Safety

Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

The Steelers need a centerfield free safety and every guy in this top five can fill that role. I love Chauncey Gardner-Johnson’s versatility and think he’s got a huge NFL future. But any of these guys in the first two rounds makes the Steelers’ defense better immediately.

1-Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, Florida

2-Nasir Adderley, Delaware

3-Deionte Thompson, Alabama

4-Taylor Rapp, Washington

5-Darnell Savage, Maryland

Inside linebacker

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The gap between the Devins and the rest of this group is wide. I don’t personally view inside linebacker as a significant draft need but if they could land Germaine Pratt in the third round it would be a steal.

1-Devin White, LSU

2-Devin Bush, Michigan

3-Mack Wilson, Alabama

4-Blake Cashman, Minnesota

5-Germaine Pratt, North Carolina State
