– 1st Round Pick Breakdown & Thoughts
1 (33). Arizona Cardinals
WR DK Metcalf, Ole Miss
With the Cardinals trading Josh Rosen to Miami, they can get the corner they need with the 48th pick. That means they can snag Metcalf, a first round talent to help out make Kyler Murray explode.
2 (34). Indianapolis Colts (from NY Jets)
OT Jawaan Taylor, Florida
The Colts traded out of the first round, and they’ll get paid off for it with good value in the second. Taylor is a top 20 overall prospect who slid right into Friday thanks to a supposedly questionable knee.
3 (35). Oakland Raiders
CB Byron Murphy, Washington
The Raiders might be pegged with Missouri QB Drew Lock, but they’re building up the parts with other cornerstone players. With the next pick not coming until the 106th in the fourth round, they’ll address the corner issue with Murphy, or Greedy Williams if he moves on down here.
4 (36). San Francisco 49ers
CB Greedy Williams, LSU
A No. 1 wide receiver would be nice, but Williams sliding down to this slot is too good to pass up for a D that needs a No. 1 corner, too.
5 (37). Seattle Seahawks (from NY Giants)
CB Rock Ya-Sin, Temple
It’s Seattle, so it’ll probably whiff on value to get the guy it really wants – like it did with DE LJ Collier in the first round. But if it keeps this pick, it needs a corner, and there are plenty of good ones on the board.
6 (38). Jacksonville Jaguars
OT Dalton Risner, Kansas State
The Jaguars needed an offensive lineman, but they passed in the first round to get the ridiculous value of Kentucky DE/LB Josh Allen. Now they go for a versatile blocker in Risner, or possible Oklahoma’s Cody Ford.
7 (39). Tampa Bay Buccaneers
S Taylor Rapp, Washington
The D, the D, the D. LSU LB Devin White is the quarterback of the defense for the near future, and now the secondary gets a boost with a great-looking safety who can step in immediately.
8 (40). Buffalo Bills
CB Lonnie Johnson, Kentucky
The Bills nailed it with DT Ed Oliver in the first round, and now it’s time to work on the secondary. They’ll snag Greedy Williams, Rock Ya-Sin, or Byron Murphy if any of them drop. If not, Johnson isn’t a bad consolation price.
9 (41). Denver Broncos
QB Drew Lock, Missouri
The Broncos came into the draft needing defense, defense, and more defense. They took TE Noah Fant in the first round, and in the second they’ll get their quarterback for the near future. Have fun, Joe Flacco.
10 (42). Cincinnati Bengals
DT Dre’Mont Jones, Ohio State
The Bengals need to go for defensive playmakers over the mid-rounds, and they’ll overreach a wee bit for a strong defensive tackle who can get into the backfield.
11 (43). Detroit Lions
OG Cody Ford, Oklahoma
The Lions need help for the secondary and the defensive line, but they can give that a shot later. They could use a few more options on the offensive front, and the versatile Ford will slip way too long.
12 (44). Green Bay Packers
WR AJ Brown, Ole Miss
It’s time to give Aaron Rodgers a toy to play with. The Packers went for the tools guys in DE Rashan Gary and S Darnell Savage in the first round, and in the second they’ll grab a receiver. It’ll be either Brown, or Ohio State’s Parris Campbell.
13 (45). Los Angeles Rams (from Atlanta)
DT Trysten Hill, UCF
The Rams traded out of the first round, and they have to load up on options for the defensive front. They might go with a pass rusher like Louisiana Tech’s Jaylon Ferguson, but they know the value of tackles, and Hill will be a huge help for Aaron Donald.
14 (46). Indianapolis Colts (from Washington)
WR Parris Campbell, Ohio State
The Colts will either go wide receiver with the 34th pick and offensive tackle here, or the other way round. Assuming they go with Jawaan Taylor with the first pick in the second round, getting a speedster in Campbell here would be amazing.
15 (47). Carolina Panthers
S Juan Thornhill, Virginia
After getting their pass rusher in Florida State’s Brian Burns in the first round, the Panthers start to work on the secondary. It would be nice if a top linebacker was here, but they’ll get the versatile Thornhill.
16 (48). Arizona Cardinals (from Miami)
CB Julian Love, Notre Dame
No pressure … just be a whole lot better than Josh Rosen, who the Cardinals gave away for this pick. It’s a great value get if Love is still here, but …

17 (49). Cleveland Browns
OT Greg Little, Ole Miss
Welcome to the 2019 NFL Draft, Cleveland. Time to protect the franchise. Baker Mayfield needs the line to be beefed up with as many options as possible, and Little is a nice value get here.
18 (50). Minnesota Vikings
WR Deebo Samuel, South Carolina
Yeah, the Vikings got C Garrett Bradbury in the first round, but unfortunately, they could’ve waited to get a guy for the pivot with Texas A&M’s Erik McCoy and Mississippi State’s Elgton Jenkins each likely still available. But finding Kirk Cousins another weapon would be fantastic – Samuel can do a little of everything.
19 (51). Tennessee Titans
DE Jaylon Ferguson, Louisiana Tech
The Titans got a wonderful value pick for the defensive interior after taking Jeffery Simmons in the first round, but he won’t be able to play for a year. Ferguson would be an instant pass rushing threat.
20 (52). Denver Broncos (from Pittsburgh)
DE Zach Allen, Boston College
Here’s the nice part about the trade with Pittsburgh. The Broncos were able to go TE Noah Fant in the first round, and they should be able to take a quarterback – Drew Lock? – with their first pick in the second. Now it’s time for the defense, and it’s the perfect spot for Allen to be a part of the pass rushing rotation.
21 (53). Philadelphia Eagles (from Baltimore)
LB Mack Wilson, Alabama
Corner is a must at some point, but finding a thumper of a linebacker would be a wonderful spot for Wilson. It’s a light group at the position – get one now, and then address another spot with the 57th pick.
22 (54). Houston Texans (from Seattle)
RB David Montgomery, Iowa State
Here’s where the Texans eat. They need more help for the offensive line – to go along with first round OT Tytus Howard – and they need a running back. It’ll be either Montgomery or Penn State’s Miles Sanders here, and then …
23 (55). Houston Texans
C Erik McCoy, Texas A&M
Center isn’t a pressing need, but the Texans can get an upgrade in McCoy, or try him out at guard. They need more and more and more O linemen to keep Deshaun Watson alive.
24 (56). New England Patriots (from Chicago)
TE Kahale Warring, San Diego State
No one’s expecting Warring to be Gronk anytime soon – or ever – but getting a new, ultra-athletic tight end to go along with first round WR N’Keal Harry would help keep TB12 going. With another pick at the end of the second round, they can address one of the lines.
25 (57). Philadelphia Eagles
CB Joejuan Williams, Vanderbilt
The Eagles should be able to come up with a fantastic find at corner here. One of the decent ones should drop, and landing a big, physical corner in Williams would be a perfect get.
26 (58). Dallas Cowboys
DE CHase Winovich, Michigan
It’ll be tempting to go after a tight end with Alabama’s Irv Smith still on the board, and the secondary could use some work, but working on the defensive line is a bigger deal. Winovich would be a wee bit of a reach, but he’s a tone-setter who’ll produce right away.
27 (59). Indianapolis Colts
S Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, FloRida
Assume the Colts address the offensive tackle and receiver spots in their first two second round picks, and now it’s about grabbing the best player on the board, at least for the secondary. Gardner-Johnson would be an absolute steal here.
28 (60). Los Angeles Chargers
CB Trayvon Mullen, Clemson
Finding help for the offensive line is a must, but the secondary needs playmakers on the outside, too. After going with Notre Dame DT Jerry Tillery in the first round, the Chargers will go corner in the second. If Mullen isn’t here, that means another good one will slide.
29 (61). Kansas City Chiefs
CB Sean Bunting, Central Michigan
The Chiefs have to do something at corner, and several good ones should still be available. They might think about grabbing a running back – especially if Penn State’s Miles Sanders is still on the board – but they can do that two picks later.
30 (62). New Orleans Saints
C Elgton Jenkins, Mississippi State
The Saints have to nail this pick without a first rounder, and with this their only selection until the fifth round. They need more options to play around with on the offensive line, and while Jenkins is a center, he could find an instant home somewhere on the offensive front.
31 (63). Kansas City Chiefs (from LA Rams)
RB Miles Sanders, Penn State
Don’t ignore the idea that Kansas City takes two defensive backs in the second round, but they need an upgrade at running back without Kareem Hunt around. Sanders would be an instant high pick in your fantasy league.
32 (64). New England Patriots
DE/LB Christian Miller, Alabama
Assume the Patriots will go big on the passing game with their first two picks, and then grab one of the edge rushers still on the board. Miller should still be here, and so will Georgia’s D’Andre Walker.
